Seen ENT but still very scared and confused

Hi all, a couple of months ago I got a piece of apple peel lodged in my throat and I feel it's still there. I've been examined three times now by ENT docs - most recently yesterday by a consultant. He was my last hope - but again, he couldn't see anything and diagnosed me with 'globus pharyngeus.' Meaning that although I feel a lump in my throat, there's actually nothing there.

I'm so confused. At what point did the peel vacate my throat and leave me with phantom symptoms instead?

It feels even worse today and I am absolutely convinced the peel is still there. I can feel it distinctly. I'm now really scared that it's actually lodged beneath my vocal cords - he couldn't put the nasal endoscope beyond them because it made me gag too much.

I'm so fed up and scared - what do I do next? I feel all the docs have now written me off as 'imagining' my condition. Should I now just leave it and hope that it resolves on its own? I can't face any more medical appointments but I can't live with this feeling either...

Any advice very welcome, thank you.

Re: Seen ENT but still very scared and confused

Maybe it scratched your throat and that's why you can still feel something. The only thing is I can't imagine the scratch lasting for months.

Just remember that getting anxious and stressed out only makes it worse. I've had a lump feeling in my throat when swallowing since January. Believe me freaking out makes the lump or in your case apple peel seem ten times bigger than it is.

If you start to get anxious remind yourself that you can still breath and swallow. That's what I do. It helps!

But don't give up. If you're not satisfied then look for another doctor.

Re: Seen ENT but still very scared and confused

Acid reflux can also commonly cause that "lump in the throat". You might want to read up on LPR on the acid reflux board. Not all ENT's really undersand LPR that well. You can have reflux symptoms without feeling heartburn.

In more rare cases, TMJ can also cause the "lump in the throat" feeling. There is a sticky at the top of the TMJ board with TMJ symptoms that give you throat symptoms. You can have TMJ symptoms without actual jaw pain.

It is also made worse by anxiety.

Re: Seen ENT but still very scared and confused

Thank you so much for your replies. I'm trying to follow all the 'globus' advice and sit it out for the next 6-8 weeks that he told me it might take to clear. Having good days and bad days!

I'm still convinced there is something in my throat - but if no one can see it, no one can remove it for me. I feel abandoned cos no one now believes what to me is the LOGICAL explanation for my symptoms! Anyway - I'm just hoping that gradually it will wear away or break up and come out without help.
