I am a new member. I am suffering from Pulsating Tinnitus. Approximately 50 milion people in the USA suffer from Tinnitus or noise inside your ears like a ringing or crickets etc. but only 3% of tinnitus sufferers has the Pulsating kind. I called it the noise of silence because it is most noticiable when one is alone, not doing much and then the noise inside your ears, pulsing, 24x7 is enough to drive you crazy.
This kind of tinnitus may be a sign of a dangerous disorder like a brain tumor or aneurism. It is not a good thing to ignore! The first thing that an internist will check is your blood pressure, and if it is high, he will precribe meds for High Blood Pressure. Sometimes, it goes away if the B.P. lowers as it happened to a friend of mine.
The next step may be a MRI and a MRA to see if there are tumors or an aneurism in your brain. Also the MRA is a diagnostic tool for artery and vein malformation (which is a cause of Pulsating tinnitus); in the mean time your internist will be checking your blood (CHOLESTEROL) and should do a tyroid test too. ALSO ANOTHER TEST THAT IS IMPORTANT IS a Carotid doppler to check if your carotids are clogged.
In my case all of these test came normal except the tyroid, which I do not know the results yet since I had the test last week. I already saw a ENT specialist, Dr. Loren Bartels, in Tampa who did all kind of test including several hearing tests, checked my ears inside, and read my MRA, MRI but nothing came out. The last step, according to him, is an angiogram which has a 1% risk of a stroke. The reason that I have not had this test is because he says it is a 95% chance that I do not have anything vs a 5% that I do. He said that he does not see anything that may be causing the Pulsating Tinnitus.
In the mean time, I am literally going crazy with the noise. I describe the noise as being of a pulsing nature like you hear your heart rate or your blood woshing through your veins inside your ear. It is 24x7, it varies in intensity day by day for no reason, most of the time is on my right ear but sometimes I just can not tell if it is in both especially when is loud like today. I do not need anything to messure my pulse since I heard it loud and clear.
This noise scares me and bothers me so much that I had lost 12 pound since February 26, 2010. I am pettite and skinny so it is not good.I also started having lots of anxiety since I am scared of the intrusive and loud noise. I used to dance Zumba every week x3 but the loud music bother me and the exercise makesthe intensity of the noise worse. Drinking definitely affects me and makes the noise worse and stronger. I used to enjoy an occasional glass of wine, no more.
What do I think it caused this P.T. : Well I never before had any problems in my ears, no noise, infections, never used ipods or listen to loud music etc.(I am 59 years old) Towards the end of January, I started having trouble hearing and I was told that my right ear had a was builtup (an audiologist friend of mine looked inside with a camera -special tool for them to see the ear inside- and he told me about the wax.)
I went to a local ENT and he told me the same. Then he cleaned my ears (to me was a barbaric procedure) then he send me to have a hearing test and afterwards I went home. I went to bed and at somepoint of the early morning (2:00 AM) was awaken by the intensity of this horrendous pulsating noise. I called him to his emergency number since I was desperate. They told me to make an appointment but that what I was experiencing was not an emergency. I saw him back 3 days later and for the first time in my life I heard the word PULSATING TINNITUS. I had it ever since february 26.
I am a very positive person who always practices positive thinking, etc but this is bigger than anything I have been through before. I am a 12 years cancer survivor; this has been worse in comparison. I have good days and bad days (bad today) in good days, I work hard at my school just to loose myself and try to put the noise out of my mind.
I used to enjoy/love my free time after work, alone. It was my time to read, relax, come down from the day of work. Somedays I just sat to enjoy nature. Also my family is suffering because I am changed from a positive upbeat person who loved live to this unknown me. Those days are gone! I am literally scared to be alone because this noise is madening. In bad days like today, I am desperate. I have read other boards for people who have this condition, and the word desperate is mentioned often. I need to know that there is something out to help me. Doctors pretty much say "live with it" but it is because they are not suffering this condition!
If there is anyone who can help me, please do so. I am trying to find more info but mostly will like to learn of other sufferers of P.T. and how do you deal with this debilitating condition. The doctors that I have seen want me to put it behind me but how do I do that? I need to find some practicioner who will not give up in one consultation and who will try to find a reason to find an end to this torment. Thanks for your help.
Have you been to a different ENT after the problem started?
Just to let you know, my tinnitus (not pulsating) got better after a few months, but I am still experience some kind of noise. I completely stopped using headphones and listening to loud music. Check for things that might aggravate the problem, i.e, caffeine, stress. I would avoid zumba for a while.
When the noise inside my ear is bothersome I do some relaxation exercises. It doesn't fix the problem but it can improve your condition a lot. You have to be persistent.
My ENT told me to try Vit B12. I still experience some tinnitus, but it's not there all the time and when it is it doesn't bother me as nearly as before.
Only people who suffer from tinnitus know how maddening it is. You're not alone.
i have exactly the same issue. 3 years going to the same ENT all he does is check my hearing. I told him 3 years ago there was nothing wrong with my hearing. He said " well it is not being caised by a tumor!" Bit of course he never hecked for a tumor. I have different i surance now and i can go to any Dr i want . I am going to fine a DR who specializes in tinnitus becaus it is very irritating especially at night. I will update
I had an episode of the pulsating inner ear that started about 2 months ago - I had recently gotten over an ear infection - but did not start pulsating until a few weeks after it cleared up. I did some research - whch scared me and sent me back to the Dr.
He took a look at my ears - asked me a few questions of how I have been feeling, gave me nose drop and told me to take zyrtec. I thought - this guy has no idea of what's going on - boy was I wrong - it cleared up in a few days - and has not returned. Now - I do tend to get allergies and sinus issue's alot, and I still get the occasional 'regular' ringing tinitus - which I"ve had on and off most of my life - it was the pulsating that really scared me - and it's true that it can be from something much more serious - like a tumor.
I just want to say - make sure you get this checked out - it can be very serious -or not so serious, as was my case. I have since stopped the nose drops and zyrtec -as these should not be taken 'continuously' and still feel good - with no pulsating.
Hello everyone: I am now almost one year since my pulsatile Tinnitus started on Feb. 26, 2010. I nearly went CRAZY, dropped 20 pounds, felt miserable, was obsesive with the noise that started in one ear and is now in both. I had all tests done including CAT scans, MRI with and without contrast and finally a few days ago, an ANGIOGRAM which I call "a test from the torture chamber". SO far there is not a reason for me to have this pulsatile noise, but all the potential bad things like aneurism, and tummors had been ruled out. A while back, 2 months into my horrible ordeal, my family doctor prescribed MIRTAZAPINE and that pill (only 15 mgs.) one daily --helped me to overcome the worst of the anxiety, panic attacks, and lack of sleep from the onset of the P.T. The pill helped me to gain control of my life, and gave me the time that I needed it to accept, or get use to my new situation. One side effect was that I gained 20 pounds in about 5 months of use, so when I was feeling really better, I stoped the medication (about 2 months ago). Now after my boy got rid of all the meds, I am still handling it fine.
The noise is there, but no more anxiety or panic. My noise level and the kind of noise has changed many times. This is a crazy thing, it started in one ear, now is in both. Now after the angiogram, feels stronger. Hopefully it will go back to a more tolerable level. It is very important to find help for the initial stage, I used to cry for having lost the peace and silence. Not anymore, I am getting used to the noise. I wish that I could go back to the silence, do not get me wrong, but I decided to be happy again. I do not want to suffer more the agony of thinking about what it used to be. I still pray for a miracle but I am living my life the best I can. I decided that I did not want to dwell on misery, it takes you nowhere.
Get on with your life, however it works for you. I hate medicine and its side effects so I am trying to do it all with my mind. Peace to all who like me suffer from P.T. I have read about many people who after the angiogram find out a cause for the pulsating noise. Some are CURED with a simple surgery! unfortunately, for others like me, there is no reason like I just found out last week. I am sending my films to other specialists in the world.
Please it is important for you to Find a doctor who knows about it. THERE IS CURE FOR SOME. Dream to be that person and if not, find a way to overcome the noise and get on with yopur life. It does not happen overnight, but it will happen. We have so much power inside our minds! Pulsatingcrazy.

I have PT it's been so long ago. I woke up on a normal morning. I went to the rest room to use the restroom and while i was sitting i heard the loud sound start in my right ear.
It sound like my heart had ran away to my ear. LOL. Well to make a long story short. I have been to THREE ENT doctors. I was told i had a wax build up. I did have a brain tumor which was found acidentally while have an MRI an a MRA. I have a lot to say but i am afraid it is not going to help you out. So I will just say I hope you will find help soon
I cried reading your post. You wrote exactly what I'm going through. I have had the PT "whooshing" for 3 years now. I have had every test except the angiogram which I will be doing, but I'm sooo scared. I'm 33 (married w/ 2 kids) and live in fear and anxiety wondering if I will have a stroke. I has turned my life upside down. We all suffer with pulsatile tinnitus and we all are looking for the cure/answer. As scary as this has been....I'm glad I'm not alone dealing with PT.Do you have an update since you last posted?

Hi there my name is johnedwin and i had what u describe during 2003,eventually i was diagnosed with a condition called lvh or left ventricular hyperthrophy,it is a thickening of the left side of the heart,i was medicated with ramipril amlodipine and bendroflurozine ,the noise eventually went, but i,m still on hypertension drugs but i,m feeling fine, i hope this resolves your worries,i was about your age when i had it...............regards johnedwin
I am new to this site. I see that you posted about your ear issues in 2010. If you get this message I am very curious to see how you are doing! I am dealing with the same issues sine january 23rd 2011 and I am hoping for success stories! Thanks
hello rwood 73
I.m pleased to say the pulsating noise i had in my left ear has gone, however i still get a hissing noise now and then,it mostly starts after i have had pizza ,so i,m guessing that salt laden pizza was pushing up my blood pressure,so thats of the menu,i was on ramipril and amlodopine plus bendroflurize for my blood pressure and this appears to have cleared up the pulsating noise i was always a keen cyclist ,i have stepped up my mileage , exercise seems to bring down my bp,i must have had high bp for a long time as it has caused a thickening on the left side of my heart and this was causing the pulsating noise,i hope this info is of use to you, good luck and good health...........regards john edwin
