M y 3 year old son has a lump on his neck about the size of a golf ball

I have a 3 year old son who has been ill for the past 6 weeks now, i took him to the doctors about 5 weeks ago and they told me his ear looked sore and that it was a viral infection, and told me to give him calpol, but now it seems to get worse every week, he has had sickness and diarrhia, he had a rash all over his body the next week and then this week he came back from nursery with a lump on each side of his neck about the size of a golf ball so I took him back to the doctors and they said its just his body fighting off infections. I just want to know is it normal for a viral infection to last this long and for his glands to be that swallen. I've been so worried because a few people have said it could be mumps.
