| Re: salty taste and taste loss after adult tonsillectomy
I did not experience this after having my tonsillectomy when I was 18. I have read something about this before though. Some people experience taste loss or some sort of dysfunction in their taste (either they can't taste sweet or salty things) after a tonsillectomy. It is thought to have something to do with 1 of 2 things that occurred during surgery. The first is from the pressure of the tool they use to keep your mouth open during the surgery and the other is damage to the nerves that supply taste (these actually are located deep in the neck below our tonsils but for some people they go right under the tonsils, making them susceptible to being disrupted during the surgery). I would speak to your physician about this though if your taste does not come back (however I also read that in most cases it does come back).
