I had bronchitis for a couple of months and had several rounds of steriods and antibiotics. The symptoms are finally gone, but I am left with practically no sense of smell and tasting only about half of what I should taste. I frequently also "smell" a sulfer-like smell and taste it sometimes when eating.
The ENT doctor today took a scan of my face and head and said all was clear. He said my condition was caused by nerve damage by the prolonged infection. The sulfer smell was a result of the damaged nerves trying to heal, and incorrectly reconnecting. Smells are interpreted as the sulfer smell instead of the actual smell. He said nothing could be done to help my situation - but he did say he had heard some reports of zinc supplements helping some patients with this condition.
I know I could have a much more serious problem, and I guess I will just have to get used to my condition, but I really hate to think of being like this for the rest of my life. Does anyone have any information that may help?
Thanks,
Jack
