You might have some type of blockage in your nose either from a deviated septum or something similar and that could be causing trouble when you are lying down. You are right that you shouldn't use Afrin for more than a few days. It can become addictive and cause you to have even more stuffiness when you stop using it. Try sleeping with your head somewhat elevated. That may help. You might also try the Breathe Right Strips - they help hold your nostrils more open so that you can breathe more freely. If you continue to have the problem, you should probably see an ENT or allergy specialist to get to the root of the problem.
