Unhappy Enlargement and bumps (lumps) on Tonsils and on pharynx

Enlargement and bumps (lumps) on Tonsils and on pharynx.

I can see some lumps on the left side of my tonsil and a large enlargement bump on my left tonsil. Basically it is unsmooth and uncomfortable. There are also small lumps on the sides of my pharynx and I can see two bumps separate inside my pharynx. There might be more down where I can't see (esophagus) probably not but I can't see anything deeper.

I have attached a picture of my throat below. Please take a look.

I think it started a week ago when my throat felt sandy. Then few days later the skin at top palate started to itch and my throat felt 1 hard bump (don't know where). That hard bumpy feel went away after I ate food. I then started to swallow my saliva a lot more because I felt sticky fluid like mucus in my throat and maybe some bumps, somewhere between my throat opening and my esophagus (I was not sure). Later I check in the mirror on my throat and found that there were lumps and bumps on the back of my throat which I have described at the top. It did not have any symptoms (hurting, fever, enlarged lymph nodes) and I did not have trouble swallowing food. I might of had some physiological fear of dead by cancer and with loss of appetite because I am a paranoid person about being sick and I also get depressed. Sometimes I might feel and think about vomiting but I actually never vomit though. I have also had trouble sleeping because I thought about the bumps all night long. The lumps felt as it were a little numb (maybe) and icky (like extra stuff which doesn't belong there). They were flesh colored.

So what should I do? Is it bad, should I be concerned that it might be something very bad?????

What are my treatments?

Re: Enlargement and bumps (lumps) on Tonsils and on pharynx

Since this is worrying you so much, go see your doctor or an ear, nose and throat specialist.

It's probably not anything serious (maybe as simple as an allergy), but if it turns out to be a serious problem, it's always better to catch it early. Maybe you have an infection of some sort that an antibiotic will take care of.

Whatever it is, see a doctor and get it taken care of. Then you'll be able to stop worrying about it and get a better night's sleep.

Re: Enlargement and bumps (lumps) on Tonsils and on pharynx

Well I have been to and have seen a doctor. He took a look for like 1 sec and said that it is probably just an virus infection. I don't really believe him . He didn't prescribe me anything and said that it will probably be gone later.

How could these lumps not hurt though and feel stuffy (maybe numb)? I thought most tonsil infections hurt.

If it's a viral infection, antibiotics won't do any good. You just have to wait for your body to take care of it. If the doctor was right, it should go away on its own. I suggest you give it a couple of weeks and go back to the doctor (or another doctor) if it doesn't get better.

Tonsil infections don't always hurt. At the time of my tonsillectomy, my right tonsil was ten times bigger than my left one (it contained sulfur crystals, which are caused by bacteria), but it never caused me any pain at all.

Just one last question, Can you explain why does the back of my tongue feel numb close to those tonsils and tonsils feels numb and also pharynx and a little numb on my top palate (just the general throat opening feels numb, not too numb though). BTW I am only 16. Have you taken a look at my throat pic in the first post: attachment.

Re: Enlargement and bumps (lumps) on Tonsils and on pharynx

I don't know about the numbness. Do you notice it when you swallow...or does it just feel numb if you touch it? I don't remember having any numbness, but I don't touch the back of my throat because it would just make me gag. However...now that I think about it...when I would get one of those stinky things on a tonsil, I'd use a Q-tip or something to try to get out, and there really wasn't much feeling there. Maybe what you're feeling is normal and you just never noticed it before.

Yes, I looked at the picture. (Great teeth, by the way! Wish mine looked like that.) To my untrained eye, your tonsil just looks enlarged. My ENT told me that tonsils are lumpy and bumpy. My enlarged tonsil was fairly smooth. He said it looked like a cyst that had closed over, whatever that means.

I've noticed "bumps" in my throat sometimes, too. I think they come and go. I just looked, and I don't have any right now.

You mentioned earlier that your throat was itchy. My throat (soft palate) itches when my allergies are acting up.

It might be just normal but is getting dry mouth at night when I sleep normal too?

What did you do for your treatment of tonsil. Drink lots water?

Re: Enlargement and bumps (lumps) on Tonsils and on pharynx

Maybe you breathe through your mouth when you sleep. That would cause a dry mouth.

I had the large right tonsil for several years. I didn't do anything to treat it. It didn't bother me. It was just big. My ENT wasn't concerned about it because I don't smoke. Apparently, most tonsil cancer victims are smokers. But there is a history of cancer in my family, especially my dad's side. There were 7 brothers and sisters, and 6 of them died of cancer. None of them had the same kind of cancer. So my ENT and I decided to take them out. Everything tested fine, by the way. No cancer, praise God. Just one really big tonsil.

After the tonsillectomy, I drank lots of water, chewed lots of gum, ate mostly mashed potatoes, took my pain pills (At first, I had liquid medicine. YUCK! I had them switch me to pills. Much easier for me to take.), and slept in a recliner instead of lying down. It wasn't so bad, really. They say recovery is more painful when you're older, but except for about 15 minutes on Day 7, it wasn't too bad at all. I'm 58 and had my tonsillectomy on July 23 of this year.

Have you pressed on your tonsils? Looks like you have tonsil stones -- those white bumpy areas.

Re: Enlargement and bumps (lumps) on Tonsils and on pharynx

I have not pressed on them hard. How would they feel? Are tonsil stone bad? What are the symptoms? how do you treat it? How long does it last. Does it match the symptoms that I have had? will it affect my other lymph nodes?

Tonsil stones = chronic tonsilitis. An infection of the tonsils. If you push on your tonsils with a q-tip, you may dislodge one. Nasty pieces of white curd like matter that smells awful.

Re: Enlargement and bumps (lumps) on Tonsils and on pharynx

Tonsil stones are what I called "those stinky things on a tonsil" in one of my September 18th posts. I don't consider them to be "bad". I just think they're a smelly nuisance. I was always afraid I had bad breath because of them. Often, they come out of the tonsil on their own. Some people press on their tonsil with a Q-tip to try to force them out. You don't need to worry about them. I had them for years. They aren't dangerous. They just stink.

Re: Enlargement and bumps (lumps) on Tonsils and on pharynx

I don't know if they are ever hard. Whenever I spat one out, I could easily squish it between my fingers. If you had dislodged one, you would know it. Maybe the reason your tonsil felt hard is because it is infected and enlarged.
