I had surgery on Monday (on other thread 22nd Nov) Septoplasty, bone spur removal, polyp removal and sinus surgery clean out...
My nose is completely scabbed inside, I look so funny when I talk because my top lip and nose are swollen and don't move at all!!!
I was wondering how long disposable stitches take to dissolve and when would be safe to gently try to remove some scabs to make it more comfortable and hopefully allow me to breathe!
I know it sounds gross but I've never wanted to pick my nose so much!
Hi there, I have my doubts about that you could ask the professional about it. I suspect if you pick it there is the potential to make it bleed and be vulnerable to subsequent infection. Itching is sometimes said to be a sign of healing, I would let it.
Tried to phone the hospital and doctors but being Saturday they are both closed! Typical! The scabs are driving me crazy, my left nostril is so sore. It feels really tight and stings, I've tried carefully to remove some crusts but I'm scared I'll cause a bleed!
I go t a follow up appointment letter fr hte 21st December so they have no intentions of seeing me unti then! Bloody NHS!!!
Hi Choirgirl
Thanks for posting, I've got a saline spray to use 3 times a day and a steriod spray until Tuesday. It doesn't go up very far though as my passages are so blocked. I've tried gently blowing or rather breathing out harder than normal but hardy anything comes out! It's stopped bleedy now which is good but I'm just wondering how all this crust and gunk is going to clear itself without a little help!

No follow-up appointments until almost a month post-op?! That surprises me. I had my packing removed 3 days post-op, and other appointments at 1 week, two weeks and 5 weeks. At least 2 of those appointments involved debridement (the doctor suctioned out scabs, scar tissue and lots of gross globby gunk). He said he was picking my nose for me.
My nasal passages have been clear since the moment the packing came out...3 days after surgery in April, 2009. No foolin'! I haven't been stuffed up since!
After the packing was removed, I started using saline nasal spray and an antibiotic nasal spray. I also used a NetiPot to keep my sinuses rinsed out, but I don't remember exactly how soon I started that.
At two weeks post-op, I was given permission to blow my nose, so I'd hold off on that, if I were you.

What surgery did you have hun? My tampon packing was taken out the morning after surgery and I was sent home a couple of hours later, I am concerned that I am completely blocked on the left. I think I might book an appointment with my doctor on Monday to see what he says cos a month to wait is ridiculous. I hate to think what’s stuck up there! Eugh!!
A cyst was removed from a maxillary sinus, septum straightened, turbinates cleaned out, and openings made in my ethmoid sinuses.
Pretty similar to me then, no cyst I had 2 polyps in maxillary, ethmoid was cleared, septum straightened and bone spurs removed. Will take your advice on te nose blowing, tyry to stop pickign and go to see my doctor on Monday!
Thanks for your support
Ok i;m actually a bit freaked out now! My left nostril that is still completely blocked has a white lump in it, I tried to tease it with a cotton bud but it looks like it's attached to me! In front of it are three tiny white stitches, this is what I thought were scabs until I managed to clean around them!
Does this sound normal, swelling perhaps or is something wrong? Am a concerned my doctor won't know and my specialist appointment is a month away! (
If your doctor doesn't know, won't he have your specialist take a look before your scheduled appointment? Or won't he at least talk to the specialist to get his/her opinion? I don't know how these things work in the UK.
Well I wonder I can't see it but maybe what you have is a bit of packing there I would still leave it alone except for what the doctor specifically told you to do. Maybe if you could take a picture of it and send it to the Doctor he might take a look for you to decide if you need sooner.

Reason: typo
I'll certainly give it a go but the referal process over here takes so long unless I was bleeding or something I think I'll be told to wait!
Youtube and places like this have lots of info pre surgery and one day post op but no in depth info for me to calm my nerves...ok I'm exagerating I'm sat under a blanket with a cup of tea and my cat with my husband in the kitchen cooking fajitas!!!
Choir girl you've been really kind to me darlin thanks

I phoned the hospital today and spoke to an ent doctor, he agreed it doesn't sound right the left being blocked so has booked me in to see him on Wednesday 1st. That's set my mind at rest
Yay!!! So glad you don't have to wait a month to find out what's going on. Knowing is always better than wondering. I hope it's an easy fix. Let us know what you find out.

Sjb - I've added a picture to my profile of my left nostril.....make sure you ate a while ago before you look at it cos I don't want you throwing up! heehee!
It doesn't look like it does in the mirror on the camera! Looking at it in the picture it doesn't look like what's blocking it...think I'm being neurotic!
