lump behind ear?!

Hi,

Recently a lump has appeared behind my ear, it's about an inch in length and is painful to touch.

I used to get this when I was younger/pre-teens, about once or twice a year. Every time I would go to my Doctor they would shrug and put me on antibiotics but nothing would happen. Eventually it would go away by itself but I never got an answer as to what it was. One time at age 12 I had three Doctors peering over me with an open copy of Greys Anatomy arguing whether or not it was a swollen lymph node and whether it was in a safe position to surgically remove it!

I never had it again since, but I woke up yesterday morning in pain and the lump has returned. I've googled it, and everything I've read is about swollen lymph nodes but I was assured when I saw a Doctor at age 12 it was certainly not this. Anyone any idea what it is? Or had similar problems? I'd like to know what it is and if I can stop it randomly popping up. :/

I'm not sure how much this will help you, but just for some reassurance. . . my mom had a lump behind her ear that bothered her on occasion - very much like yours. They told her it was simply a cyst and surgically removed it. She says that area of her neck still bothers her from time to time, but overall, everything is fine now.

If you don't have swollen lymph nodes, I would guess it's just a growth that shouldn't be there and that can be (and probably should be) removed. Sometimes a harmless growth or cyst can become harmful if left and allowed to grow. I would find a doctor that's willing to answer your questions and look for what the cause could be (or at least a suitable treatment if a cause can't be found) rather than shrug, write you a prescription for an antibiotic and send you on your way. If one is unwilling to do that, I would look for another. Good luck and I hope you find some answers soon!

Re: lump behind ear?!

I have a swollen lymphnode behind my right ear. They did a fine needle aspiration biopsy and it ruled out anything serious. My Dr. said that sometimes when the body fights off a virus, at any given point in our life, a lymph gland can become swollen. He said as long as it doesn't change in size not to worry about it. This was 15 years ago and it's till there. But mine does not come and go...I don't know if that would be categorized the same. Maybe a fine needle biopsy would help put your mind at ease too. It doesn't hurt, just feels like little pin *****s....sure hope this helps. Best regards!
