squeaky left ear, exagerated low sounds but have grommets (tubes) fitted

i've had this for nearly a month now. it first hapoened when i was laying down and then all of a sudden my hearing went a little funny.

When I talk, my voice in my left ear sounds louder (like my ear is blocked, but my hearing doesn't sound muffled). Also, low bassy noises, thuds etc are amplified in my left ear, and make hearing the higher pitched noises a little harder.

When I press my ear canal closed I get a very loud sqeak (people in the room can hear it!) which my right ear doesn't do.

I went to my local a&e as a they couldn't see much wrong. The only thing they did comment in was that the grommet in my left ear was further forward than the one in my left ear.
I've had grommets in my ears since oct 2010 and haven't had anything like this before. I have seen a specialist as I thought that I may have patulous eustachian tube disorder but he isnt sure. he scoped my ears but he couldnt see anything abnormal.

i had a ct scan of my petrous bones and that came back normal.

This feeling that I have now does seem to wear off, and then only reoccurs after I've been laying down (ie sleeping), well, it wore off on the 1st day at around 1am. My ear also feels a bit full when it happens.

its happened several times since, generally once a week and varies in severity and time, but always after i have been laying down. today it happened but pressing my ear canal closed quickly several times seemed to lessen the effect, though was still there. my ears click when i swallow and yawn, and sometimes "pop". they also click and pop when i am suffering the problem.

i saw an ent nurse last week at my pre op assessment and briefly mentioned this to her. she suggested that it is unlikely to be a pressure issue as i have grommets fitted causing equal pressure in my outer and inner ear. i am having my grommets removed next thursday.

my new gp suggested etd but it would seem odd gaving two conflcting issues?

Has anyone else had this before?

Thanks

Re: squeaky left ear, exagerated low sounds but have grommets (tubes) fitted

Hi there! I also have bilateral tubes/grommets. I have had a host of weird symptoms that began when I returned from a transcontinental flight about a month back.

Basically what mine turned out to be was an active infection with fluid. Is there a chance there's fluid building up in your ear? I think even a small amount can wreak havoc with the tube's ability to regulate pressure effectively.

My symptoms before the infection began were gunshot ear pops (so loud/violent they could wake me out of a dead sleep). My symptoms after the infection/fluid became evident were lots of swishy/fluid-y feelings in the ear, and if I plug nose/blow, I can hear a loud, high-pitched squeak/squeal like air escaping from a balloon with the neck compressed. It's SO loud that anyone within earshot can hear it (I made a recording of it on my phone to impress/scare friends). I'm guessing it's my real eustachian tube that's blocked on that side, either by pressure or fluid, or both.

The fluid built up to the point where it was actually running out of the pe tube into my ear...I called my dr and got a script for antibiotic ear drops that I place in the affected ear 2X a day. The drops go through the tube and actually treat the infection directly. Anyhow, it does seem to be clearing up and the pressure is lessening. But the ear seems prone to relapsing into a pressurized/blocked state, so I try not to do pop the ear on that side. When the ear becomes blocked, it probably cuts my hearing by about 50% on that side until I can get it back open. It's all very annoying...and I'm having trouble driving because we have hills, and hills mean my ears have to equalize, and the infected side just isn't up to snuff right now.

I hope some of this is of help & that you find relief soon.

Re: squeaky left ear, exagerated low sounds but have grommets (tubes) fitted

Its moved to my right ear totally now.. I seem to be able to control it by closing the ear canal with my hand and forcing a bit of air down it, or as has just happened by cupping my right ear rather than forcing air down it.

My right ear has been ringing all weekend with this as well.

I'm wondering if this is wax related, even though I apparently have no wax in my ear. The right ear thing started the day after I cleaned the canal with a cotton bud (I know, I know).

Re: squeaky left ear, exagerated low sounds but have grommets (tubes) fitted

Mine turned out to be a middle ear infection with fluid and a granuloma that is growing into and partially blocking my grommet on the right side, so it's all but non-functional now. I'm on steroid antibiotic drops, and if the granuloma doesn't go down, I have to have the tube surgically removed.

Sounds bad for you I hope you'll be ok!

I'm having my tubes removed on Thursday. I'm getting bored of all this, and the constant ringing in my right ear

My left ear sometimes pops and crackles.
My right ear just seems blocked ringing etc

I feel disorientated and sick as well, especially when I'm in a car

Let us know how the removal surgery goes, and also if you feel better with the tubes out. Since I might have to have the right tube removed soon, I'm interested to know what it's like after tubes are out.

Why did you have tubes put in?

Re: squeaky left ear, exagerated low sounds but have grommets (tubes) fitted

I will do! I hope I do, I can't live with what I have right now . It's more depressing than the main problem I have, which is why I had the tubes put back in.
I suffer with the symptoms of patulous eustachian tube disorder and the consultant suggested them. I have seen a new consultant since who wants them out so I can get a better, hopefully more accurate diagnosis.

I recently had a ct scan of my petrous bones and they're normal, so the initial thought of my having superior semi circular canal dehiscence were lessened

Will the mystery continues. Today I suffered the autophony issue in my right ear while it's been blocked.

Chewing gum doesn't help clear it. I just feel like it needs to have a big "pop" to clear it.

Hate it hate it hate it!
