Swollen Tonsil problem, any help please?

So I've been battling this swollen tonsil problem for probably 6-7 weeks now. It never really gave me much problems, so I didn't think much of it, after the 3rd week I went to the free clinic(no insurance), and the dr quickly looked and gave me Amoxicillin. After 10 days nothing nothing really changed, 3 days after the 10 days I went back and seen a different doctor at the free clinic, she then said she thought it was strep(no strep test done), and gave me penicillin v potassium, the 2 white spots I did have, went away, and the swelling went down quite a bit, but not all the way. After that 10 days was up the swelling had gone down from what it was at, but not all the way. It's been about a week-2 since then and I feel like the right side is not budging. I had made an apt with the University of Iowa hospitals during the first few weeks for a check up with a dr(I have free insurance coverage with the hospital), and about 5-6 days ago I had that appointment finally, which she is now my primary health doctor and I'll be seeing her for any future problems, check ups. She said she doesn't think it's anything and it's probably allergy related. But I just want to hear other opinions and possible causes/fixes. They took 5 viles of blood from me to do routine check ups on all my body functions. I got a letter in the mail yesterday saying everything is fine and all is well. That blood test did not include major diseases though, which is the only thing that's worrying me(not that I think I have any, but I'm a high anxiety type person, and reading things on the internet scare me). So now here's things about me and my household that may or may not impact things.
Since my doctor visit at the UoI(7 days ago), I've been taking claratin(knock off brand) 24 hour relief 1x a day in the morning, at the same time as my daily multivitamin.
I've been drinking 2+ bottles of SmartWater a day.
I have 3 cats, and 3 cat liter boxes. I try keeping them clean, and changed a few times a week.(may or may not be enough). I know cat pee has pneumonia in it, and I think this may be a big thing that's not helping)
I have 2 air purifiers, 1 in the front of my apartment, and 1 in my room. Got these a few weeks after the problems started to help clean the air in my place, it's helped a lot says my brother who usually leaves my house feeling like crap from the cat odor allergies. (3 days ago I turned the Ionizers off because I read that it actually does more bad then good).
One of my cats pees on the floor sometimes and I try cleaning it up as best as possible, but probably should get a rug doctor. I did use floor cleaning(resolve pet odor) a few times to try helping.
I have been a marijuana smoker for years, I do keep it pure by using water pipes and avoiding "Blunts-Using tobacco paper filled with marijuana", for about a year now. But since this problem has persisted, today is day 15 of not smoking any marijuana, and I feel better overall, and probably won't go back to smoking since I want to get healthier overall.
I'm 6'2'' and 155 lbs. All my vitals were perfect.
I've been gargling salt water,(I try to do it at least once a day since I forget), I use mouthwash a couple times a day(morning and night).
The color of my throat and tonsils are mostly a normal pink color, no white spots, just the right side won't seem to go back down.. I don't even know what it's supposed to look like normally, but it's clearly bigger then the left side. Not much pain to it, sometimes is a little sore though.
So if anyone even reads this, can anyone please give me an idea of what they think is going on, a little reassurance would do me in for a better nights sleep. Any other questions that might help my question please ask, I'll be hoping for some responses. Thank you.
*note- I have been pretty phlegmy also, but the claratin seems to be helping a little bit, my dr said it would take about 2 weeks for it to start kicking in?* but then again, I always have been, since I can't seem to NOT sleep with my mouth open.

Re: Swollen Tonsil problem, any help please?

Scotty,

Sorry you're not feeling well, but I tend to agree with your doctor that it's probably allergy related. First, I'm glad you've stopped smoking because smoking anything (legal or illegal) is not good for you and can irritate your throat and sinuses. Second, the kitty litter boxes. You have 3 cats, so it's recommended that you have 1 box for each and then 1 extra, so you need to get one more That may be why you have peeing on the floor! You should be scooping the boxes at least once a day (I do mine twice...morning and evening). Every 3 to 4 weeks I completely change the litter and wash out the boxes. (I use the clumping litter). That will help with the out of box urinating. Cats don't like to "go" in a "used" area. It will also help with the odor as all urine produces ammonia. Have your carpet cleaned. Third, you mentioned that you sleep with your mouth open which is going to cause your throat to dry and become sore and scratchy. Have you tried the Breathe Right strips? They open your nasal passages to help you breathe better at night. Hope this helps and good luck.

Thanks for the reply, I really do hope it's just allergies! Out of like 100+ views on this I was really hoping for more answers.

I concur on the allergies. You might also try a sinus rinse before bed each night. If you don't get good relief from the claritin in a couple on months, then try zyrtec. There are plenty of good antihistamines out there and you just have to find the one right for you.

Re: Swollen Tonsil problem, any help please?

Just an update, 2 nights ago I rented a Rug doctor to remove cat odors and stuff in the carpet hoping it would help, and when I did so I found a small (area up against the wall 4 inches out and 2~ feet long against wall boards), of mold in my shag carpet.. I got Fabulouso and a scrub brush and scrubbed the crap out of it, and went over it with the rug doctor, and it completely removed it from the carpet, I then sprayed mold and mildew spray in the area and pulled the carpet back a little bit and sprayed down in there(does not need wiped type of spray), so it will kill anything remaining), hopefully that will help? Tonight will be the 3rd night since I've done that, and I did the spray stuff 2 days ago. Does anyone think this might be the cause to that? I called and told my doctor about it and she said she's going to get back to me and they may put me on a antibiotic for that. The ear throat and nose specialist called me back today also and scheduled a Tonsillectomy(remove my tonsils), on jan 13th, I don't want to wait that long for me to find out if I'm gonna be alright! It's driving me crazy. I keep reading things that point to major health diseases such as throat cancer and that gives me crazy anxiety. Here is a photo I just took of my throat so you can see exactly what is going on. The color looks normal over all, maybe a little bit red.

Also, Besides drinking herbal "Bigelow" green tea w/ lemon, and I add a few teaspoons of honey, taking a claratin, and my normal daily vitamin, is there any other remedies I can try doing to help out? (I stopped gargling salt water, mom was telling me I may be drying my throat out and it's probably doing no good since that's for when you have an infection?)
Sorry for asking so much, but I don't really have anyone I can talk too about this stuff, and my doctor is a busy doctor that sees people with free health care at the hospital so talking to her is impossible and the next appointment I can get with her is over a month away.

Actually, if you sore throat is due to allergies and not infection, the salt water gargle is appropriate. If it wasn't working, then the sore throat isn't allergies, it's an infection.
SOunds like the tonsilectomy is the route to go.

Re: Swollen Tonsil problem, any help please?

Good day ...

You should see your doctor. Tonsil are the two masses on the back of the throat.Tonsil & adenoids are near in the entrance to the breathing passages where they can catch incoming germs. so that you have problem in swollen.
Tonsil is like a white or yellow coating, a slight voice change due the swelling, have also a fever. this are some that you feel when you have tonsil. so you better consult your doctor or physician to examine. you have many test for doing that.

You need to do all the doctor told you so that you can feel better for that tonsil..

good luck..
thank you

Re: Swollen Tonsil problem, any help please?

So I don't think I have throat cancer, but just to ease my mind, if I did, what would be signs of it? Or would it not be apparent after 7-8 weeks of just having swollen tonsils. I'm not really sure nor do I wanna go poking around on the internet. I did have 4 viles of blood taken at the hospital check up on Nov 6th(They took the blood since it's been so long since I've been to a Dr) to do normal checks such as the vital organ functions and everything... If I did have something like that would it show up in my blood results? Cause I got the results back and everything checked out fine.. but I don't know if they would know just by taking blood? I've stayed the night at my grandmas house for the last 2 nights and have honestly been feeling better, So I do feel like it's environmental from the cat odors and mold. Just having some worries, so any legit answers would be really appreciated. Thank you.
-Note, my right side tonsil is a bit more swollen then the left, neither of them are touching the middle tangle thing in my throat so they're not that swollen.. they have a nice pink color to them, a little red in the morning, but after herbal green tea with honey they seem to go back to pink, no white spots or any other spots. Just swollen tonsil.. I have a apt on Jan 13, 2013 at a ENT to have them removed.. but that's so far away

Sounds perfectly normal for a severe case of tonsillitis. Just keep doing what you are doing. It took 3 months to get my tonsils uninfected so they could take them out.
