Loss of sense of smell and numb Tongue!

Hi
I had the flu just before Xmas and completely lost my sense of smell (which has affected my sense of taste too) neither has come back yet!
The gp has prescribed antibiotics and also a steroid nasal spray since but no luck!
He's referring me to ENT to get checked although I have a feeling I might be waiting a while. In the last few days I've been getting strange numb feeling on my Tongue, a bit like after having had an anaesthetic at the dentist.
I have no pain but it's amazing how much it's affecting daily life including me having burnt through 3 pans and almost set the kitchen alight due to not being able to smell anything!!!

I just wondered if anyone else had experienced this and when I do get my net appt through what kind of tests I could be looking at having??
Many thanks
Jo

I'm experiencing this sort of thing too.

Im not getting a numb tongue but its tingly. but the worse is loss of smell and taste.

I also feel really tired too.

I think i need antibiotics but my doc has pout me on to a nasal antibiotic and beconase spray, im waiting to see if they work.

Jo636 & Worrybucket,

I know this is an older post but I was wondering if either one of you has had any luck with getting your sense of smell back?

My husband lost his sense of smell last Jan-Feb. after a bad virus and has tried steroids, nasal sprays and is now doing acupuncture trying to get it back.

Would love any & all suggestions?

SK

Re: Loss of sense of smell and numb Tongue!

Hi,
No it hasn't really come back now and its been a year in December. I would say it isn't a complete loss of smell and taste, it's more of a distorted smell and taste. Things don't smell and taste like they used to for me.
Perfumes all smell the same. Cucumber tastes like scent too.

I can sort of taste a bit but like I said it doesn't taste like it should.
the Doctors thought it may be because of a low Vit D level but that went back up and still no better. They also checked my Zinc levels too which were ok.

So now I think it might be how its going to be fo rme, which isn't nice, but not much I can do.

I think it may have something to do with my over use of nasal decongestants over the years. I could never bear having a blocked nose and not being able to breath.
