Numb Tongue and Scab gone and bloody after Tonsillectomy in Teenage boy

My son had his tonsils removed on March 20th so tomorrow will be one week. This evening he comes to me scared with one scab gone and it's bloody looking. He also says he is spitting up a little blood. I think he is scared and thinks something is wrong. Is there something wrong? Also ever since his surgery his tongue has been weird. He says its numb. They did say it would be a little sore from being clamped during surgery but for how long. Does everyone talk funny after surgery and if so for how long. Well that is when you do talk. My son gets mad when I ask him a question because it hurts to talk and he sounds terrible.

Re: Numb Tongue and Scab gone and bloody after Tonsillectomy in Teenage boy

I would contact the doctor first thing tomorrow morning. Ask all the questions you did here, and if you can get a follow up appointment, do so.

Were you given any instructions for post op care? Typically you are given a package of information about recovery and after care upon release from the surgery. Usually healing occurs quickly in the mouth, but I am not familiar with the latest on tonsilectomy.

I hope you can get the answers you are seeking first thing tomorrow from your sons doctor.

Re: Numb Tongue and Scab gone and bloody after Tonsillectomy in Teenage boy

Losing the scabs at about this point is normal. Some lose them earlier and some later. And there is sometimes a little bleeding that follows with that. The general rule is that as long as it is not more than a Tablespoon at a time, it should be fine. Lots of ice (chewing or eating it) can help with both pain and slowing any bleeding. A full recovery is usually about weeks, so he should expect things to not quite be normal for a little longer yet.

I had a tonsillectomy in my 30's about 2 years ago. My tongue was numb and I couldn't taste on that side for almost a month. Usually it goes away well before that, but it is nothing to worry over just yet. The clamp can cause a little nerve trouble and it takes a while to recover. Good luck!
