Question Please help me, do I need my Tonsils or Adenoids out?

[B] Hey Im a teen and Im always snoring! I can barely breathe through my nose and my throats always so dry and sore because I sleep with my mouth wide open. My left tonsil is pretty big! I'm scared to have surgery because I think that I wont be able to breathe. I know that they will secure my air ways but the thought just worries me. Would I be able to be put to sleep through gases and not an IV if I was to have surgery? After surgery how long do you need an oxygen mask on for? If surgery would help then I would be more than happy to have it. Many thanks!

It does sound like you need them out. They will have to give you an IV because they can't take your tonsils out with a gas mask over your face! And same for the oxygen mask - you won't have one. No need for it. Most people don't have oxygen via mask anyway - it's usually a canula - two little prongs that go inside your nose - but you wouldn't need that either.

Re: Please help me, do I need my Tonsils or Adenoids out?

Great big tonsils that make you snore and breathe thru your mouth all night can actually cause sleep apnea from obstruction. I would talk to your Dr about getting them out. If there is reluctance, having a sleep study done may provide the objective evidence for doing so. The IV is necessary, oxygen may not be needed, but like Titchou said, would be given by canula if required. The biggest proble with tonsil removal is potential post op bleeding, so avoid aspirin and antiinflammatores like ibuprofen for 2-3 weeks after surgery, or as Dr recommends.
