First of all, I have no idea how tall you are and how much you weigh, so I don't know if you really do need to lose weight. You may need to increase your self esteem more than decrease your weight.
If you really do need to lose some weight the right way to do it is to eat just a few less calories than normal. Try to eat between 1400 and 1600 calories a day. This will keep your metabolism high and keep you from losing muscle so that as soon as you get to the weight you like, you can go back up to about 2000 calories without gaining weight.
If you eat too few calories your metabolism will slow and you will eventually stop losing weight even though you're eating practically nothing. Then, when you try to increase your cals at all, you will gain a little bit of weight at first while your metabolism learns to speed back up. So the best way is to just never eat so little that it ever slows down.
If you eat 1400-1600 cals a day and then exercise for 20-30 minutes (like the step aerobics in gym) then you will be at about an 800 calorie deficit each day, which will be a little over 1 and 1/2 pounds a week fat loss. Try it for like 2 weeks and see how it goes. What do you have to lose by just giving a moderate diet a chance?
