Can an endoscopy detect my bulimic history? - Eating Disorder Recovery Message Board

I am a recovering bulimic and am getting an endoscopy (where the doctor examines the esophagus and stomach with a camera on a thin tube.) I'm wondering if he will detect my past bulimia? In all the years of my bulimia (3-4 times per week) I never vomited blood, had any stomach or throat pain, brushed my teeth carefully to help prevent enamel erosion - never had any physical problems (that I'm aware of). Any info. would be appreciated.

I had an endoscopy earlier this year and was told by my GI doctor that they'd be able to tell if I had been purging recently. My GI doctor knew about my past history with anorexia and bulimia and knew that it hasn't even been a year since I began my recovery. He did the endoscopy/colonoscopy to look for GI bleeding (I've been anemic for about 8 months and they don't know why), and purging was of course one of the first causes they thought of. I had told them I hadn't purged in almost a year...nothing showed up on my endoscopy...no signs of past purging or anything, so it probably depends on how recently a person has purged. Good luck!

amwood - thank you for your response. I hope they find the cause of your anemia. I congratulate you on getting control of your bulimia. It has been within the last year that I've purged, but not for months. I'd appreciate anyone else's cpmments if they've had experience with the endoscopy exam and bulimia. Thanks.

good luck carlyinok!! i had one of these years ago when i was purging daily as much as i could handle, and the dr said my stomach looked a little irritated but nothing serious. and i had just thrown up the night before, so sounds like you'll be ok. good luck!

Why would you wish to hide this vital piece of mental and physical health from your doctor? I would be thankful if it would show up, because it could start a marvellous dialogue between you and your healthcare provider, if you do not bring it up on your own.
