calories

How many calories does someone need to eat to be considered someone with an eating disorder? Like if someone only ate like 600 calories a day, would they have an eating disoder?

Re: calories

600 calories ain't even eating. LOL I would say if it's consistant, and an everyday process and you obsess over not going over that limit, then yeah.. But many many other things come along with eating disorders.

Re: calories

I have heard (not sure if it is true) that your body goes into "starvation mode" under 1000 calories. I agree with Em: a lot more is involved with an ED than just calories. But yes, physically, your body cannot function on only 600 cal a day.

Re: calories

well eating 600 calories is still eating though and they arent throwing them up so that doesnt fit into an eating disorder. Maybe someone who is a strict dieter.

Re: calories

Eating 600 calories isn't normal. And unless it's not on purpose like you're running around all day Christmas shopping and forget to eat (though a grumbling tummy would remind you), then it's a specific goal to eat that little, therefore falling under the category.

Re: calories

ok, i gotta butt in here as i have come across many people who have eating disorders and still DO EAT...but as someone posted before - its when exercise and binge purging, etc and eating rituals come into play - thats when the title of having an eating disorder gets used.
yes, if someone is restricting to 600cal a day and wont budge from that because they fear gaining weight or losing control i would say that they are on their way to having an eating disorder...if you or anyone like you are heading down this path please PLEASE find help, speak to someone - i have had these bloody illnesses for more than half my life and would do anything to prevent someone from experiencing what i have been thru
take care

Re: calories

i cant see how 600cal could be normal in usual circumstances. it would depend on the reason for such restriction..if it is medically advised thats one thing, but if it is for weight control its NOT
