Unhappy Need help Doctors are stumped

Hi I am new to message boards but I need help. About 3 months ago I got this really bad pain in the back of my left ribcage then it just kind of stayed there. Then about 3 weeks ago it wrapped around my left ribcage and I am very sick to my stomach, urinating alot more than normal. In 4 months I lost 50 lbs without trying. Also there has been blood in my stool but sometimes it almost looks gray. I am weak all the time. I have had blood tests which revealed my white blood cell count was slightly elevated, they did a CT scan and said I have 3 small lesions on my liver that they want to keep an eye on. I just went through a double scope (endoscopy & colonoscopy). They did a biopsy on my stomach which came back negative for cancer. Well now it is hurting in my right ribcage as well below breast. The pains are very strong and never go away. They have started me on antibiotics for bacterial infection and pain meds also on Prilosec even though I don't have heartburn. I was researching my symptoms and pancreatic cancer popped up. The only symptom I didn't have was jaundice. Is it possible that I have something wrong with my pancreas and they didn't see it when they did the endoscopy. I am a little freaked out.

Hi Nokinha

I would definitely push for more tests as if the pancreas is involved and there is a tumor (Which hopefully there isn't...The symptoms may be caused by pancreatitis or numerous other things.) It is very hard for smaller tumors to show up, as the pancreas itself is tucked behind the stomach and tumours normally aren't found until they have invaded the portal vein or has metastasizedto other organs which causes major symptoms (Severe Itching, jaundice and high levels of bilrubin within the blood)...If your not feeling well...insist on having the doctors do others tests...C T Scan, MRI etc..If there is a problem and they find it early, the prognsis is good.

Let me know how you get on, I'll be thinking of you and hoping that you have something minor that they can treat you with and you can carry on with your life.

Hugs Jan

Re: Need help Doctors are stumped

I called my doctor today to ask about doing more tests to check my pancreas, but I was asleep when they called back so I am gonna call back in the morning. Thank you for replying to my post and I will let you know when I find something out. I have to admit that I am pretty scared about this.

Re: Need help Doctors are stumped

Try not to worry until you get some more answers...I know thats really hard to do. Just for peace of mind get the tests done as soon as you can, then if it's nothing you can just use your energy to get better.
I'm in the middle of having numerous tests done as my Iron levels have suddenly gone very low and they suspect internal bleeding from somewhere...I always get very worried when the doc's call me back in after tests as I had AML when I was 21...So the one good thing was that my white blood cell count was within normal range.
Oh well I guess like with you, it's a waiting game...It drives you "Mad" doesn't It?

I know it's a silly thing to say "But do try not to "Stress out" until you get your tests done.
I'll be thinking of you and don't forget to let me know how you get on...

Take good care of yourself,
Hugs Jan xoxo

Re: Need help Doctors are stumped

I am really trying but about a month before I got real sick I started having this strange feeling that I was running out of time. I've always thought that I would die young for as long as I can remember. My dad got sick when he was 44 and died at 50. I'm scared for my family. I remember what it was like for me when my Father died and I don't want my children to go through that. I just keep praying.

I wish I could give you a big hug you poor thing...Hey, it sounds like your getting really down, have a talk to your doctor as you don't want to sink into a deep depression as it's a "Hard" journey back...I know how you feel I lost my Aunty at the age of 46yo, my Grandad was only 60 and my dad was 59...but remember that medical things advance all the time, I've been on Lipitor for about 10 years already and more than likely if my father and grandad had been on the same medication then they would have lived a lot longer...
Your mind is the most powerful weapon you have and it can do amazing things if you stay positive...I know with all your uncertainties regarding your symptoms at the moment makes it hard...Just get those tests organized as soon as you can so that you can feel more in control about your health...
From the results you've had so far, they have all been good..So lets just see if it is an infection and then you can start to "relax" a bit more...could the weight loss be to stress do you think...Have them also do a thyroid test for you if they haven't already done one.

"Big Hugs" Jan xoxo

Re: Need help Doctors are stumped

Hi Nokinah,
Just seeing how your going ??
I'm sure the docs will find out the cause...have you heard back about an appointment to check your pancreas yet ??
I'm surprised that with such a big weight loss that he's not pushing things faster..Has your weight stabilized now or are you still losing weight??
If you are finding eating difficult get some "Ensure" from the chemist and try and have some of that to supplement your food intake.

Take Care, Hugs Jan xox

Re: Need help Doctors are stumped

They are sending me to a G I specialist but I can't get in to see him until November 2. I am not losing weight anymore and my appetite has started coming back but the pain and sickness are still there. I just force myself to eat. Dr said my pancreas is fine checked for diabetes and it was negative. So I guess I just have to wait to see specialist.Dr said if it gets worse go to the emergency room.

Re: Need help Doctors are stumped

They did a chest xray last week because the pain has spread into my chest and I got a call yesterday from the Dr that they saw a mass on my lung. I am going in today to talk about doing more tests and to find out what my options are. I gotta say I am scared to death. This just keeps going from bad to worse. Now my boss said she is gonna have to let me go, cause I haven't been there long enough to go on medical leave. I guess I will apply for unemployment if that happens. Trying to think positive but finding it hard to do.
Thank you for your concern.

I'm so sorry...Your going through so much at the moment..Let me know what the doctors decide to do...Your "Boss" sounds a REAL GEM...what a cow as if you haven't got enough problems..I truly believe in "Karma" & I'm sure that it will come straight back at her.... I'm not sure how things work over there but can you apply for sickness benefits?? Ask the hospital or doctors office to put you in touch with a social worker as soon as they can as worry isn't good for you right now love.
Let's wait and see what they plan to do & lets think positive that they'll be able to operate or whatever they may plan to do and you just have to work on getting BETTER...
My thoughts are with you...please please let me know how you get on...

Love and Hugs Jan xoxox

Re: Need help Doctors are stumped

I just got home from the specialists office. He examined me and said he believes I have chronic Pancreatitis. He is scheduling me to go have an endoscopic ultrasound. He said this is a chronic disease and there is no cure but we can manage it. I will know more after test.

Re: Need help Doctors are stumped

Ok I do have chronic pancreatitis. They said their was tissue damage throughout my entire pancreas. They took a sample of my small intestines for biopsy cause the doc thinks i also have celiac disease. Still waiting on those results. Still having quite alot of pain and the nausea is just as bad. They did a pain block but of course it didn't take. I am losing weight again. I went on a low fat diet and cut out carbonated drinks but I haven't noticed any benefit yet. Its been almost 2 weeks now. Put a call into the specialist about pancreatic enzyme meds. Trying to quit smoking but not having much luck, getting ready to start Chantix to help with that. I really appreciate you asking about me and I hope all is well with you. They said there is no cancer right now but that I am 15 times more likely to develop pancreatic cancer now because of the condition of my pancreas. They told me my pancreas is attacking itself.
