endometriosis and IBS

I was diagnosed with endometriosis and IBS 2 years ago. For the past 3 months I have been having bad pain, bloating and gas. I have a severe dragging pain in my right side, and alternate between IBS-C and IBS-D. I am taking amitriptyline for the pain, which seems to help. I also take charcoal tablets and drink lots of peppermint tea for the gas. I am also following Addensons elimination diet.

My periods are agony for 1 day before and 3 days during and seem to kick off a very bad attack of IBS. Also I am unable to have an intimate relationship as its painful to do so.

I am waiting for an appointment with the gastro and gynae I was just wondering if any one else has both conditions and what there coping methods are

Hi Lipspurple,
Welcome to the board. I don't know if you have read the thread "could I have endo". This has many stories of the women on this board and it may be helpful to you. I do not have IBS, I do have endo. I have painful intercourse as well. It has limited my intercourse. Right before my period I do get very painful bowel movements. I have taken amytriptoline for pain and it was not sucessful for me. I also have physical therapy for pelvic pain two times per week. When I have really bad pain I use heating pads as well as playtex cramp pads. I have to use a narcotic pain killer when nothing else works. I take bcp continuosly, allowing myself to have 4 periods a year.
What is the Addenson's elimination diet??
If you have any questions please feel free to ask. There are many women here that are very helpful.

Re: endometriosis and IBS

Addensons is a diet for IBS. It was the first elimination diet my gastro put me on to see any particular food groups make my IBS worse. Because wheat and dairy are often triggers for IBS you canít eat these on this diet. I guess it wouldnít help with endo.

I was diagnosed with mild endo 2 years ago and my gynae assured me that nothing needed to be done. He also discovered fibroids through a lap and again assured me that nothing needed to be done. I have read some articles about endo and most say that often women have no symptoms and need no treatment. I am wondering if mine has got worse in two years.

The pain I am experiencing is like a dragging, cramping pain and is in the lower left quadrant and affects the top of my right leg, (not just when I have periods at any time at all). The problem is, because of my IBS, its difficult to tell if the pain is endo related or IBS related?
Does this pain sound like endo?

Also I read something that really frightened me about endo that it can attach itself to your brain causing seizures, is this true?
Another question is will a hysterectomy help with endo. Because my periods are so bad I asked my doctor if I could have a hysterectomy but she said I was too young (I am 32 yrs old) and was also doubtful because i am childless.

Question Re: endometriosis and IBS

Hi,

I hope you are better than u were, I have endo, I.B.S. and chronic back pain, it is difficult dealing with them, wonder if u are on top of things now and have coping strategies or still struggling.
What is the diet you are discussing, I've never heard of it or the ideas about charcoal tablets?
TC

Re: endometriosis and IBS

Just read another thread of yours, hysterectomy can help endo, but it can come back, they need to remove your ovaries and be on as low a hrt as possible for the oestrogen which acauses endo to grow to be as low as possible. I'm facing a TAH soon due to same reasons as yours I'm 36, no kids and quite sad but am getting specialist advice on 24/6. Hope you are well

Re: endometriosis and IBS

Hey There-

Fellow endo sufferer here. I have similar issues- painful sex (depends a lot on position of my uterus...mine likes to prolapse/get disoriented even when the Dr "puts it back"). My endo was located on one ovary and in the cul de sac area of the Uterus. I am planning to try and figure if I have endo, from a GI, in my colon because although the outside looks good, (I had a lapro done to diagnose and remove the endo I had), I have major GI issues and like you, it is terrible first part of my period but also entire first week before I start. I never really noticed a correlation like that until I've been on the Pill (but I've been on it 7yrs). Before, my stomach/colon/cramping was terrible nearly month round, so at least now I can know when to expect it.

Unfortunately as for coping methods, I just learn to live with it but your Dr can prescribe at least for the IBS-D, a med that stars with "hys" I forget what its called, it was, for me, a pill that dissolves in your mouth and it WORKS but for me too well- immediately the D stops but then later you get constipated but if you chase it with a stool softner you may be ok. He also gave me Napraxon, also cant' take as it constipates me worse but I have it on hand should my cramps ever get out of control. While over all the pain is not as bad, my LAP did NOT alleviate the pain and some months its been worse-Dr said that should not be the case. I hope its not back. I have no idea the health of my colon but will find out.

Wish I could offer better advice. Maybe try and see a GI, too, just to be sure it is not more than just IBS? Good luck!!!!!
