Newly constructed home!!! - Environmental Disorders Message Board

We made a move, and the only house available was a place being built. We requested no glues, as natural products as possible. All hardwood floors using nails.

It's now completed, and I've been washing everything w/vinegar, baking soda, etc. Leaving the heat on; keeping all windows/doors open, keeping air filters & fans going, and there is still an odor that bothers me.

So we can't move in. Am I missing something else I could do?

Could it be blown insulation,caulking to seal windows,or any glue to put down kitchen countertops. suem

It could be "everything", but we've found the "solution". I remembered investigating "Ozone" years ago, so did a search and found these Ozone machines that hotels use to get rid of odors.

Bought one, and "bingo"....doing a room at a time, and it's smelling "FRESH"!!

Pricey, but a lifelong investment, and we're now in our home.

Worked for us, but I had to use it quite often. Of course you know that you need to be out of there while it is running... I have heard that you shouldn't be there even if it is on the "safe-for-humans" setting! Good luck!

Some air purifers can make you sick as well. I can't use any product that has an filter of any kind. I only found that I don't get sick from my ionic breeze but I am careful to have it not directly in my face all the time. I have found that with anything newly built will have something that will probably make an person who is sensitive even more so. After any move that I have made in recent years, we have had this problem with me getting sick from being sensitive of the paint, carpet, or any wood that is not sealed well. It sometimes takes months till I can tolerate our home. It makes for an unhappy person in me if you know what I mean.

We live in an apartment and I can't go out into the hallways or open our door because it makes me so sick. Luckily we live on the main floor and I go out the patio door. The neighbours watch each other's home if they happen to go out that way. We all know who comes and goes for safety reasons only. We don't bother each other and go to the gazebo if we want to visit with anyone. It's an really nice complex where we live.

So I do know how you must feel right now.

Just think tho, if they used an particle wood then we know that's wood that's compressed together with glue. Paint and anything of that nature takes a while to air out and smells awful. There almost any reason why the new house is bothering you. I sure hope you can find an solution to this problem. Try an air purifer, keeping your windows opened when you can and when you're there. Also try using 4 litres of vinegar in every room for a while, it helps me in my home. It's worth a try at least once. Good luck.
