Does anyone know if frequent pesticide control in the yard could make your thyroid condition worse? suem

im not sure about making it a lot worse, but you should really try not to use pesticides on the lawn. Im an environmental student at msu and i just finished with a pesticide course. The pesticides that you are using on your lawn, outside seep down into your groundwater if you have a well. This means you are drinking contaminated water. Also everytime you walk on the lawn and in your house you allow pesticides to come inside. It depends on the pesticide but it will increase you chance of getting thyroid cancer. Instead of using pesticides try integrated pest management techniques. For example, You can use egg shells to get rid of slugs. Hot pepper juice to get rid of various pests and the list goes on. There are tons of things you can do without using pesticides (just go on the web and type in integrated pest management). You may not see the effects of pesticides because some are slow moving and their effects take 10+ years to show up.

The use of "any" chemicals worsens our condition. Just read where the city of S.F. has eliminated the use of pesticides by 90%. Gotta be a good reason.

When the city of Albuquerque sprayed my neighborhood with Malathion 4 days in a row from a truck in 1994, half of my neighborhood became ill with asthma, back pain, stomach problems and my friend and I both became ill first with asthma and then multiple chemical sensitivity. If I am around pesticides, I begin salivating excessively and my throat swells. I would never use pesticides in my yard - your whole house is probably contaminated if you have rugs and the pesticide will not disipate without sunshine. I had to decontaminate my house as I could not walk into it withot losing my balance.

Sue, hi....pesticides can make you more hypo. Many to kill fire ants and other critters contain a precursor to the core ingredient methamizole (sp?) the main ingredient in thyroid blockers used to treat Graves. So yes, certain lawn treatments, mostly pest control chemicals can and are known to affect thyroid function, particularly those with Hashi's who may have compromised systems. I always wear a painters mask when I spread anything on the lawn and make sure I do it right before a rain storm so it does not get too airborn. Then wash hands and/or shower right away and try to not roll around in the lawn shortly after applying chems.
