Unhappy toxic mold

Has anyone been diagnosed or tested for this? If so what were your symptoms.

In June this year I developed fatigue, brain fog, muscle pain, headache and other symptoms. I have not been able to find the reason for my illness. I am wondering if mold could have been responsible for my illness. The crawlspace in my house has always leaked and I have a sump pump. Normally it isnít bad, but with all the water this year it has stayed constantly wet, (last year it was totally dry). It has stayed very cool here until mid-June and then the heat went right up into the 90ís. Is it possible these conditions produced some kind of mold outbreak that I reacted to? Any ideas would be appreciated.
I do have hypothyroidism and my doctor is attributing my symptoms to that.
(I am hiring a firm to seal the crawlspace and will hire a mold removal company).

Re: toxic mold

My symptoms have mostly been related to gastro related, culminating in a seizure disorder. I recently had my apartment tested & the mold counts are through the roof.

Re: toxic mold

My children and I had to evacuate our home due to concentrated levels of toxic mold found after testing almost a year ago. My kids and I both suffer from a variety of symptoms (including memory loss and in my case, extremely so) but have not been able to find a doctor that will say anything is wrong with us, let alone treat us. Please post if you have ever been treated for toxic mold, and if so, how?

Re: toxic mold

I highly suspect that my son and I are suffering symptoms from toxic molds, mildews and fungus. We have both been sick for several years with similar symptoms, occurring around the same times every year.

I do know, for a fact that there was black mold on a wall in an apartment where we lived for 4 years. It had eaten right through the dry rot. There was also mold on everything in my closet after the basement (located on the other side) had flooded. (Landlord evicted me after I complained about this). It never occurred to me that, that is when our symptoms began and that we continue to have symptoms.

Where I live now - the lower level, where our kitchen, livingroom and laundry area is, has moisture problems when the humidity outside rises (we need to maintain relative temp/humidity and repair/control moisture problems).

Our symptoms are flu-like and arise 2-3 times a year (late Fall, Late Spring/Early summer and sometimes middle-late Summer). When we have symptoms - usually mine are worse and last longer. Almost always - I have had to go on antibiotics, and a few times my son has had to.

Sometimes my symtoms are so bad that I end up in the ER. After an overnight stay at the hosptital, one of my doctors decided that my illness should be looked into further and he ordered a CBC then referred me to a hematologist.

I have been diagnosed with low IgG2 and IgG4 subclass deficiency. I then had my son tested for this and he is fine.

But weird things like that I had probably a better than average immunity in my younger days. I only had a few colds, strep throat in 4th grade and my whole family would have the flu, even pnemonia and I would be perfectly fine.

I started getting infusions last July - and have been getting them every month since. I had an infusion in November and then 2 weeks later, both my son and I got sick as 'usual'!!!!

The only difference I noticed this time around is that I didn't have to go on antibiotics and the symptoms (month-long) wnet away on their own.

So this illness that my son and I get appears to have nothing to do with my lowered immunity (but in a few, you'll see that perhpas it does). And I have been fed up and want to get some answers and some help. I went to oncology/hemotology and told them that I was sick depsite the infusion...and reminded them that it's not only me who is getting sick here!!!

The PA thought our 'seasonal' illness may be allergy-related and suggested that we see and allergist. Both my son and I went to an allergist almost a decade ago and had a full spectrum of tests. Both of us reacted a little to pollen, and nothing else.

Then I decided that, maybe my son and I have something infectious? A virus maybe? So I took us both to see a infectious disease specialist and he didn't think it was anything like that. However, when I told him that my son and I ended up in the ER when we were on a trip out West (smae symptoms, ended up with a massive sinus infection - all four sinuses on the scan)...he said he wouldn't be surprised if it turns out that we have 'Valley Fever'. But Valley Fever is a fungus and it is found in the soils out West - we were already sick when we left on our trip and had been sick many times before. So this doctor said for us to come back and see him again when (and if) we get sick again.

In the meantime, last week anyway, I was sitting downstairs in the kitchen and happened to look at the wall where I have a eucalyptus wreath hanging. It was drooped and soiled from dryed out mold. I have had that thing for years and it has even been through some times here when I've had high humidity/mold.

That's when it occurred to me that, perhaps my son and I have had symptoms from toxic molds, etc! And, I've been able to well keep track of our symptoms and their onset. I also realized that I feel so much better when I spend less time downstairs...my son too.

Around the holidays, when we got sick again and as we have for the last several years - we spend a lot of time downstairs. This whole thing has been starting to fall into place and makes some sense.

It was hard to do online research for toxic mold because most of what I found were ad-based sites. But I did find a few articles and research that our experinces to a 'T'. Even my immune system problems could be a result of toxic mold. And even fungus and molds can lodge into the lungs and stay there! I really do believe that is why we never quite fill up to par and are always feeling like we are about to get sick. And then possibly, when the conditions arise (e.g., high humidity) we get the full-blown symptoms!

Both my son and I have poor concentration. My memory has gone downhill (especially short-term). We tire easily and both get out of breath easily. Our symptoms start off with an unusual sore throat that last 2-3 days. Our throats are extremely dry and feel more of like a burning pain. and it will only be a 'partial' sore throat. During this time we become very lethargic and will get dizzy spells. We also get an awful amount of phlegm. We'll have a slight fever on the 3rd-4th day that will last for a few days.

We both end up hoarse - but I'll end up with laryngitis for about a month or so. Sometimes our symptoms progress to an infection and we have to go on antibiotics.

Another reason I supsect toxic molds is, I read that the mycotoxins from mold can cause an immune suppressive effect! Well that would explain the mysterious IgG levels.toxic molds and the like would explain a lot of our symptoms.

I have an appointment (and later, my son) at the allergist again. That seems like the best place for us to get started (or ended) on this thing. While it is dry downstairs, I am doing a thorough cleaning (walls, everything). Then I am going to use the dehumidifier and a/c more regularly (or buy a hygrothermogragh). I also want to get a good air purifier. and I will just have to be more agressive about monitoring/cleaning, etc.

Sorry this is soooo long but I wanted to be thorough, share some info I have discovered along the way, and be able to share experiences. Pam

Re: toxic mold

Pam that is toxic mold if I haven't seen it. I live in the basement of my parents house and every summer I have to air it out from the winters infestation of mold. Now I use a space heater and dehumidifyer to kill out the smell from the crappy unfinished part.

But recently now I've been sick for 6 weeks. Was healthy as horse from 6 till now. Starting to think that theres a form of mold growing in some part of the large room and not sleeping down here anymore I refuse too.

Extreme Fatigue.

Gradual Weight Loss.

Would get confused easily like I didnt know where I was.

Been having GI/Bowel problems too.

Hyperthyroidism/Diabeties/Hepatitis/Aids was rulled out from the first day I went into the emergency room. Blood test, urine test was done Full Body X-rays to see anything.

Getting a Abdominal Ultra Sound and Endo/Colonoscopy and Air lung Quality testing in 3 weeks. each test is 2 days apart oh lord help me lol.

But sure sounds like it. Infact gonna clean out the basement again and see for mold. I do remember mushrooms where growing through the bathroom floor from the dryer the hose busted 2 years ago.

If you are going to investigate for mold yourself....DO IT PROPERLY. Make sure you get yourself and R95 mask(sold in hardware stores) clothing you can throw out and glasses and gloves. I have just been through a mold nightmare and learned the hard way, so If I can give any advice. Please do this carefully! Mold toxin can do very nasty things with your CNS. Please be careful it can be absorbed through your skin, eyes anywhere. 500,000 mold spores fit on the head of a pin and it takes little to disturb them and cause them to go airborne.
Sorry don't mean to sound pushy....just be safe....L

Re: toxic mold

Thanks for the concerns I got my painters dissposable suits and air mask's with plenty of spare filters. I didnt do it yet this requires me to move stuff around to look at and I'm not that strong anymore to move around furniture and appliances lol.

But thanks for the heads up.

Re: toxic mold

browneyedsusan

I would so love to talk to you. We purchased a house in October of 2004 which we discovered mold in the basement. I was so upset I tore out the mold infested drywall and insulation with no protection. Soon after I had a tightness in my chest. By December I was no better. and went to Doc. He said I had allergies take Allegra. The Allegra has not helped. I feel as though I can not take a full breath. Within the last two weeks I have been experiencing cronic muscular pain. I feel like an 80 year old woman. This is from a woman that had all 4 of her children natural. I feel sure it is related. I am scaired and would love to know what you have found out. I have changed Doctors to someone who I go to church with and I know will take me seriously. I agree with you WEAR A MASK!
I would like to know more of your story. I have Dr. apt. March 14th.
Thanks! Mpriestley

Re: toxic mold

You should check out the book Intelligent Medicine by Dr. Ronald Hoffman. He has a page or so about a family he was treating for mold poisoning. They were suffering headaches, nausea, and were spacey and lacked concentration.

Re: toxic mold

Hello Priestly~
I am sorry to hear about your situation. I understand how you feel. First thing, Do you know what kind of mold you were dealing with? If not, can you describe to me what it looked like? color, texture, wet looking, location and anything else you can think of. Second, Do you have a compromised immune system? Chemotherapy, Prednisone use, HIV etc? Don't let any doctor tell you this is not happening. Some molds let off a toxin that can do some really strange things to the body. If you immune system is healthy then you don't have to worry about it causing any diseases like Aspergilliosis(which can affect the lungs, brain, any organ). My daughter and I got a huge dose of toxin mold spores. We opened a box of books and pictures that my Nana had stored away over 20 yrs. They were all moldy (inactive(not growing) as they were dry, but very dusty and covered everything). We sorted through that box and let mold spores fly all over!! We were told it was like opening King Tuts tomb! Anyway..within 48 hours we started with some pretty scary wierd symptoms...deep burning in the skin, twitching all over our bodies, our veins hurt in our arms, deep aching pain in thighs and arms, joint pain in fingers and wrists, tremors in different areas of our body etc. Well it did not click right away it was from the mold. It actually took us almost a month to figure out what was going on. The doctors ran blood work, and other tests and nothing. Then Kera (my daughter) grabbed a piece of fruit out of the basket and I said "Throw that away , it has mold on it" and she laughed saying "Your worried about that little bit after that box of mold!" Well needless to say a lightbulb went off in my head and the educating began. Where I live, traditional doctors only acknowledge mold causing allergy symptoms not neurological. I hired a company to come in and do air quality testing in that area and they found 3 strains at high concentrations. All were possible of being neurotoxins and some used for biological warfare!!!! By now 2.5 months had passed since the intial exposure and some symptoms had died down while others had shown up. We both had problems with word recall, I would use a word in a sentence that started with the same letter but had nothing to do with the word, for example I would want to say "problem" and pretty or another pr word would pop out. This happened quite a few times a day. Kera, was trying to say One hundred and twelve(112) in math, and not matter how hard she tried she would come out with one one two, or eleven two. It was so strange and scary. Anyway I could go on for months as you can tell. Be persistant. We had to figure out what to do on our own as we live in Rural Ontario and doctors just were not understanding what was happening to us. We did start a natural cleanse of very healthy food and supplements and it has taken us from feeling 20% up to 85% most days. If you would like to know more about them , let me know. Don't think you are exaggerating your symptoms. Answer the questions about hte type of mold and I will try to help you out!!....Take care......Lesley

Hi I hope you dont mind me responding to your post but I really need help. OK, I moved to Illinois about two years ago, This house I moved in to had mold in the basement. I'm not sure what kind though. Acouple months after moving, My face started to hurt, like I got punched. Then my ears started to itch like crazy, so bad I wanted to cry. Well I moved out of that house and into another house in Illinois thinking I would feel better. WRONG! I feel worse. My ears hurt so bad and their so itchy, their really scaley inside. Plus I am dizzy all the time now. I get really spacey sometimes. The docter said I have fluid in my ears and told me to take an antihistimine. I tried but it dosent really work. I know there is mold in this basement. It is on the corner, looks wet and some brown, but mostly black. I also devoloped IBS since living here. I never really had any health or immune problems. I never had allergies either. untill I moved here. I forgot to mention, I also have post nasel drip. I am moving out of state very soon I just dont know how much more I can take. I hate being dizzy! I have been like this for a year now. sometimes it feels like something in my ear is stabbing me. Does this sound like mold to you? I appriciate any comments
leelee
