Unhappy SENSITIVE TO STUFF IN MY APARTMENT

I been getting very sensitive to stuff in my apartment these days. When I sit at my desk near my window I feel sick. My desk is one of those desks you assemble yourself, pressed wood I guess what you call of what it's made of. I took off all my papers and junk and still sensitive. Don't know if it's desk or outside etc. Also when I sit on my highriser, I feel the smell of the new floor pillows I bought that I use to rest my back on. I bought them in KMart. They came unwrapped. They are dark blue and made of that new really soft silky feel material. It's not machine washable or dry cleanable. Just spot cleaning. And also sensitive of my clothes after washed at laundromat from the laundromat people. I ask them not to put any perfumy stuff in my laundry. I keep my air purifier running for the past year. Ever since I started using it it blows the air around and I feel am getting sensitive to the air that maybe coming from my dark blue rug, those pillows and my blue reclining chair. Am tired of feeling sick it worries me. What can I do?

Re: SENSITIVE TO STUFF IN MY APARTMENT

There is testing you can have done to see what sensitivities you have.

Best wishes

You sound like you have some of the symptoms of MCS (Multiple Chemical Sensitivies). One of the complaints of victims of MCS is that they react to the "outgassing" of chemicals, such as formaldehyde, in furniture, paneling, building materials. etc. Outgassing can last for many years.

Also, a complaint of some victims of MCS, is being sensitive to outside air, when pollens and pollutants are high. You could be having problems with the desk, the outside air, or both.

I was always allergic, having both Asthma and Sinusitis. But, after a long term sinus infection, I also became extremely sensitive to almost everything. From my research, once someone has become "chemically sensitive", there is no solution but to avoid those things that bother you, or get rid of them.

One of my nasty reactions is to certain blue dyes. I've got loads of blue jeans, which I really like to wear. I can't wear them. I now wear Jeans, but they are black. Someone who is chemically sensitive could react badly to odors, chemicals, dyes, clothing, allergens, pollutants, outgassing from furniture or carpets, smoke, exhaust fumes, gasoline products, dust, detergents, fabric softeners, etc.

I have a room air purifier in each room of my place. I've had the same problems as you, with sometimes getting sick when I run them. I bought a large fan. When running the air purifiers make me sick, I take the filters out of the air purifiers, vacuum them using gloves and a mask, and then take them outside, where I run the powerful fan on high, blowing air through each one of them for a few minutes each. Another problem with air purifiers is that they kick up dust when your run them. It's best to be OUT of the room when someone first starts up an air purifier.

I finally got rid of my sinus problems by doing an "upside down" flooding of my sinuses with peroxide and baking soda, but, by the time I cured my sinus problems, it was too late. The infection had already done it's damage to my system, and I've had to learn how to adapt to MCS. Not fun. Let's hope your situation is different, and is only short term.

Would you mind if I asked you what your symptoms are, when you get sick?

Regards......
