It may not be the same symptoms as your allergies "of old", but that doesn't mean that you are not having an allergic reaction which is mostly effecting the mucus membranes of your throat.
Do you wear a mask while painting?
Are you able to open windows while painting?
I am very sensitive to many things, including paint. Just the slightest, tiniest, trace elements of allergens, especally cigarette smoke and volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) can cause all kinds of uncomfortable symptoms, such as a mucus buildup in my throat, irregular heartbeat, higher blood pressure, difficult breathing, malaise, fatigue, etc.
