Unhappy Hi, I'm new...and looking for others with Epilepsy

Hello everyone! This is my first post here. I've been hoping I could find a place like this. A little background info.... I'm 28 years old and I had my first seizure in 1998. At the time I was very stressed, not eating well, not sleeping well and I was also on my period. I went to the hospital had tests etc.....all were fine. Since it was my first I wasn't put on any meds. I had almost forgotten about it when again in 2001 I had my second one. Again all the same things were going on at that point in my life. The stress, not sleeping, period etc.... This time I was taken to the hospital by ambulance (first time) was very scary. Same things were done and all were normal. Thank God! :-) This time I was told to have an eeg but I was so scared to know the results that I waited almost a year to have it done. I finally did and it was normal. This second seizure I had, I was put on Dilantin. Well I started taking them and didn't have another seizure again until this past June 04. That was my own fault as I slacked some, missed a few pills etc. so when I was at the hospital all my blood work was normal except my dilantin level was quite low. Well, the last couple of weeks I've become so busy and I ran out of dilantin and I kept thinking I'll be ok I'll just pick them up tomorrow. Well, yesterday while at work I had yet another seizure. I mananged to get myself to the hospital where sure enough my level was a 6 and is supposed to be between a 10-20 The last two I've had even though were lack of med.
levels I once again was on my period and have/had stressful events going on in my life. Not sleeping well all that good stuff again. So it seems that all that ties in together. I'm sure some of you know what I'm talking about. After yesteday I promised myself (and everyone else) that I won't miss my meds. ever again. It's just not worth it. Anyway, I just really wanted to find others who deal with this and know how it feels. Everytime I have one is scares me to death.

Well, I hope to get to know some of you. and hope we can help each other through this. Like I said I've been looking for a board for awhile but couldn't find one. This one looks really good. :-)

Re: Hi, I'm new...and looking for others with Epilepsy

Hi Aligirl 7,
The siezures do sound scarey for you. I'm pursing this board because my daughter started having severe migraines that evolved into 24 hours a day almost 7 days a week. When the Neuro did all the work up on her, one of the considerations is siesures. All the tests came back normal and The Dr. prescirbed Topamax for her. So far, its working, and the headaches have lessened to almost no headaches. She mentioned to me that she blanks out for moments, and she doesn't remember anything during that time. So, I thats why I started on this part of the board.

I wondered if you have ever done anything for the stress in your life. I know that Stress over long periods of time will cause lots of different diseases that people have. I Have autoimmune disease. When I eat right and do a regular skilled relaxation for stress my ANA tests goes down to normal.

You might want to look into Yoga, or skilled relaxation cds for healing.
Sorry I can't list anything else on this board. But there are lots of websites regarding this issue.
Good luck....
Nana

Re: Hi, I'm new...and looking for others with Epilepsy

Hi Aligirl,
I'm 26 and had Epilepsy my whole life. I've been on cocktails of meds that include, Dilantin, Zoroton (not on those 2 anymore) Epilium and Lamictal. I have been taken meds the whole time and when I was in late teens decided that since I had not had any siezures I could take myself off the medication with out docs permission of course.
Needless to say my 6 year siezure free came to an abrupt end. Closely followed by a roasting from my doc.
Stress is a major trigger for a lot of Epileptics, me included. I recntly transfered out of my current job as problems with someone was causing excessive stress and in turn I was having lots of temporal lobe activity (to do with emotions). My specialist told me to fix the prob or get out of there as each one was getting more sever. Since leaving no more activity. Aiming for 1 year in March.
I think I mentioned in your other post that if you learn to recognize your triggers you will have a much easier time controling your Epilepsy and living with it. Have you been officially diagnosed and with what sort do you know? What sort of siezures do you have?
Welcome to the board and speak to you soon
Lori

Re: Hi, I'm new...and looking for others with Epilepsy

hannasnana, Hi.....That's great news that your daughter is doing so much better. It must be such a nice change. :-) As far as the stress in my life I am also on Lexapro which I also wasn't taking along with my Dilantin for a week. It helped sooo much for about a year but I think my body is getting used to it now. I'm going to continue to take it unless my doc. will put me on something else. I get terrible pms no matter what. I mean really, really bad. I wish I could take a pill for that! It seriously stresses me out. I've thought about yoga.....maybe sometime soon. Thanks for the reply and your suggestions. :-)

Re: Hi, I'm new...and looking for others with Epilepsy

radasjewel, Hello again. :-) Sounds like the same thing that I did back in the summer. I hadn't had a seizure for three years so I didn't keep up with my pills like I should have. So, of course you can guess what happened. I was just so hoping that I didn't have epilepsy. I guess I can't ignore the fact anymore. I just have to learn as much as I can about it and how to control it. I definately know not to stop taking the meds. I thought I'd read that stress was a big trigger for some. I know I don't do well under stress! I believe all four of mine have been grand mals. The job I'm at right now is VERY stressful for me as well. I'm currently looking for a new job. After what happened the other day I don't even know if I'll still have a job. Which of course will be more stress! :-( I have been diagnosed as having a seizure disorder which is the same as epilepsy right???
