Tegretol and Lamictal

IF you remember me I posted about my son, Tripp, starting on Lamictal several months ago. His doc had increased his Lamictal and slowly reducing his Pheno. We were already on Tegretol 400 mg in am 200 mg in afternoon and 400 mg in evening before bedtime. The doc increased his Lamictal to 150 mg am and 150 pm...that is when the problems started...he was having headaches, neck pain and throwing up so bad we had to go to ER once..Had an MRI and MRA on him as well.......WELL, I did a search on the meds and when I found out that people taking Tegretol should not take more than 200 mg daily I called the office to tell them of Tripp's problems and the symptons he was having. She asked the doc and he cut back on the Lamictal to 100 in am and 100 in pm. We are not having any more of those symptons and the seizure (focal) are gone..we hope!! What do these people do that do not have some knowledge to meds do when a doc over dosages them!!! I was fit to be tied!LOL (A little southern talk)!! I know that it is hard to find a therapeutic dosage for most meds but seems that a doc should know when a person is having symptons of overdosage they should know!!

WISHING YOU ALL A HAPPY SEIZURE FREE NEW YEAR!!!

Betty

id), Depakote (divalproex sodium) or Depacon (valproate sodium)), you'll have to increase the amount of Lamictal (lamotrigine) to compensate. If you had a discontinuation plan for those other meds, of course, and it was all planned, then never mind. Lamictal (lamotrigine) was designed to convert from one of those meds after all.

Re: Tegretol and Lamictal

I do not know a therapeutic range for Lamictal,. but I am more familir with Tegretol. I took both of these meds together, and I as told that the Lamictal potentiated the action of the Tegretol making it seem like I had taken a higher dose. I never had to have a Lamictal level drawn, and it was because there was no established blood level at that time. I started Lamictal when it was rather new. I took 600 mg of Lamictal with 1200-1600 mg Tegretol, and that was waaay too much Tegretol. Too much meds can cause seizures too. In your case, how the meds affect your child, the seizures, and the quality of life is what you have to work with re meds. Is your child being treated by an Epileptologist at a Comprehensive Epilepsy Center or a general neuro? It makes a BIG difference. During my history with epilepsy and the meds etc. I have been "Fit to be tied" and had a few hissy fits too. Also from the South. Phoebe

Smile Re: Tegretol and Lamictal

He is being treated my a general neuro but I am going to look for a epileptologist.
Since I and the doctor cut back on the Lamictal to 100mg in am and 100mg in pm there have been no more headaches!!!!
I am taking him to our reg doctor on Monday to have the Tergertol levels checked and have them check his liver, too. I STILL think the amount of Tergertol is toooo much...he is on 1000mg daily.

Re: Tegretol and Lamictal

Have them pull a lamictal level also. My grandson has been on lamictal for 3years. just lamictal he had some problems like you discribed when they kept trying to raise his lamictal. He was 6 and they wanted him on 150 mg 2 times a day.
Later we found out his seizures are caused by hypoglacimia and we are now weaning off the lamictal. But they can pull lamictal levels it takes about a week for our results.
They found out that the levels they wanted him on made him toxic and I was right in demanding the drop. I changed neros the first one was from was a specialist from a comphrehensive specialist center. The new one isnt but specializes in children. I think it depends on weather the nero is willing to listen to you. Our firts one said kids dont get diabetis. Diabetis and hypoglacimia runs in our family epilepsy didnt and none of the tests showed he had epilepsy.
Make sure they run all the tests . Its going to take 6 months to get william off the lamictal.
Good luck.
