Phantom smells...what do YOURS smell of? - Epilepsy Message Board

I have nocturnal seizures, and sometimes, not often, smell smoke, and it's a thick, gagging smell.

Last night I had one, but this time the smell was, of all things, cat urine! It was horrible, thick, and overpowering, almost like I was engulfed in it. Never had anything like THAT before! NASTY!

What do any of you smell when this happens? Usually only one thing, or a variety?

Did you feel weird when this happened? (Besides the gagging, I mean>) confused, dazed, out of it?

I ask because it might have been cat pee! We have had cats spray our cars on occasion, NOXIOUS smell that is hard to get out of the car. Did you just smell in breifly and then nothing?>

If it is a brief thing and confusion happens it could be a simple partial. My son used to have these, but he would smell a nasty burning plastic kind of smell. He would panic if vaccuume belt got hot, it was that kind of smell. He would be dazed after and often go into a complex partial, though....

I am sure it is hard to understand when you suddenly have that awful smell hit you. My friend has this but it smells like the worst dirty diaper ever, she says. Used to scout through the whole house looking for it.............it was a simple partial!!

I haven't been around anywhere to smell any cat pee. Not in years, anyway.

I woke up feeling confused and smelling it, seemed like it lasted forever. Later when I woke up at the usual time, I had the usual sore tongue, stiff neck and headache and irritable, feeling like a truck ran over me.

I would be pretty sure that was a seizure then.....my son feels that way with his nocturnals....
