Energy Drinks and Seizures? - Epilepsy Message Board

My neuro put me on three times the dose of Trileptal (I moved, and wound up in the ER from stress and being over medicated), he asked me why I lowered my dosage,I was taking previously, had some bad reactions to that, so he suggested taking the normal dose one day, and the raised dose the next day. Because of this I've had problems sleeping, so I've been drinking a lot of energy water, caffiene...Didn't have a problem with it until yesterday. My boyfriend brought home an energy drink and within five minutes of finishing it, my face started tingling and it progressed to the rest of my body...Lasted well into the night. That's always been a sign of seizure activity. Anyone else ever have this problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

And yes, I know I need a new neuro!!!

some of the herbs in the energy drinks can cause problems. Check the bottle and see whats in it. Ginsing is a common ingredient. the RED drink, or a clone of it may be problamatic. Some may use Echinacea, even Black Sampson. All effect a person diffrently and different parts of the bodies chemistry.

AVOID the herbal supplimented drinks if you are unsure if you can take them.

I can't take any herbal or energy pills without having problems. Most meds come from some sort of plant source, that is broken down and the key ingredient isolated from it. A very common cardiac drug comes from foxglove flowers, and belladonna (used in some gut meds) comes from deadly nightshade.... not stuff to play with.

I don't touch energy drinks with a 10 foot pole lol. I drink Gatorade during the summer if I'm outside, I seize more when I'm dehydrated.

Hubby is allergic to engery drinks, they aggravate his arrythemia.

Yeah, Gatorade is about as 'strong' as I drink- lol- the other stuff just isn't regulated (the herbs, by the FDA), so you really don't know what you're getting.
