Allergy to phenobarb.? - Epilepsy Message Board

I have been on phenobarb for approx. 3 years now. I cuurently take 150mg. daily. A few days ago I noticed some red spots on my legs. I didn't think much of it at the time, but now it has spread and become a full fledged rash. It covers all of my legs and is starting to cover my abdomen. It is just bright red spots that look like red moles. It does not itch and looks like a rash I've had before with allergies to meds. I have pretty much eliminated everything except the pheno. I have stopped my vitamins, allergy med, even using any lotions the last couple of days.

I did not take my bedtime dose last night and the rash was somewhat better this AM but I took my AM dose to see what would happen and it's getting worse again.

Has anyone else experienced something similar. I have a history of sensitivity to meds. and them becoming toxic to me. Thanks for any input.

You say you've been on it 3 yrs? Usually allergies will happen as soon as you take the drug. Are you eating anything different? You should talk to your doctor, I'm no doctor myself but I don't think it's the pheno. Let us know what your doctor says.

No, I'm not eating,drinking, doing anything different. That's part of the reason I think it may be the pheno. Another reason is I had Zonegren become toxic to me after taking it about 3 yrs. Same rash but other symptoms too. I'm really not having any other symptoms right now and am reluctant to go off the pheno as it's the only thing I've been able to tolerate at all. It helps but doesn't conrol my seiz. and I know if I go off it my seiz. will increase. I see my dr. next month but may have to go sooner. It's 120 miles one waay so I try not to go more often than absolutely necessary.
