new drugs for generalized seizures - Epilepsy Message Board

My son has a history of seizures which include myoclonic jerks and generalized grand mal seizures. His seizures have been reasonably well controlled with dilantin/lamictal, but we are concerned about long term cumulative effects of dilantin. Neurologist is suggesting trials of one of the newer drugs Keppra(levetiracetam), Trileptal (oxcarbazepine) or Zonegran (zonisamide) to slowly replace dilantin. Does anyone have experience with these drugs in controlling generalized seizures? (I realize they are mostly recommended as an add-on drug for partial complex seizures). My son also has myoclonic jerks as well as absence drops and grand mal(status). He is now 3 and last month we were told he has SMEI
sever myoclonis epilepsy in infancy. I have not tried any of the drugs you have mentioned on kevin but our neurologist told us of a drug which is aimed at rare epilepsy like kevins It is called Stiripentol we are in the process of importing it as we live in the uk and it is manufactured in france it is the newest drug to the market maybe it would be worth while mentioning this to your neuro?? cant hurt.
