I have been on topamax for about a year now - with good sucess.
It has 2 side effects that you need to be aware of - especially in a child so young.
1. It does have a tendency to cause seizures in those that it does not work for. So if you find that your son is having more seizures when on this drug, especially after an increase, mention it to his neuro - it may be the drug.
2. It is an appetite suppressant, having just been approved by the FDA as such. You may find that your son has lost his appetite - this is normal. If it gets to the point where he has lost more than say, 10 lbs. He will need to be taken off the drug becuase it is not good for him metabolically.
Hope this helps.
Jennifer
