Non drowsy effective anti-convulsant...anyone? - Epilepsy Message Board

I have an appointment with my neurologist in 2 months. I am trying to research a different anti-convulsant to the ones I have tried in the past. I have petit mal and grand mal seizures (or at least I used to). Since I was put on clonazepam all the seizures stopped, but after trying to come off the drugs, I found new problems arose and the likelihood of having a seizure once I am pulled from this medication will go up 100 fold. So now, I am shopping for a new anti-convulsant.
Ones I am not interested in are tegrotol, epilim and dilantin as I have been on these before and didn't like them.

Has anyone had good experiences with another anti-convulsants and just out of curiosity, have you remained seizure free since being placed on the drug you mention?

Clonazepam has posed some problems in the last two years, but it has done its job...no seizures in 9 yrs.
(I have to come off clonazepam because it caused other problems, like insomnia, concentration and anxiety problems.)

What are the side-effects with Keppra? Is this the pharmaceutical name or is it known as something else? How effective is this drug for someone say that had seizures at least once a month?

Is this one of those 'new' drugs?

Keppra is a new med. You can do a search and find some info on it. There are threads here by those who have taken it. Some with great results some not too great. We may try it next so can not say first hand what it is like. You can also look into Triliptal, Lamactil or Zonegran. I do not think it matters if you only have one seizure a month. Good luck...

Thanks for a point in the right direction.
One thing I will disagree with though: it does matter if I end up with a seizure a month because I haven't had any in 9 years, having been seizure free for this long, would be hard to go back to anywhere near how I used to be (I'm sure you'll understand that one).

Thanks again. Now I can do some looking up on the side effects of these drugs.
