becoming immune to meds - Epilepsy Message Board

Hello everyone....i have a question and i wondered if it ever happened to any of you....my 4 yr old daughter is currently taking tegretol and valporic syrup....it seems like they aren't working anymore.like her body is getting immune to it....she is having breakthrough petimal seizures and the focal seizures are acting up really bad......i am not happy with her current ped.neuro. anymore...and am in the process of changing dr's..has this ever happened to anyone before?????

I don't have any personal experience with becoming immune to my meds, but is it possible that your daughter is growing in size and needs a med increase? I'm not sure how they establish medication guidelines, but maybe they go according to size. ???? Kathy

Hi,
I dont know if its an immunity or if its that the body is adjusted to the meds and is overcoming it if that makes sense. Ive had to have my zoloft and xanax increased because they kinda stopped...werent helping like they should have been. I also had to switch seizure meds..was on topamax (BAD BAD MED) to keppra 2000mg which is seeming to work now...ive only been on meds 9 montsh so i dont know. I hope and wish you and your child well.

that seemed to happen to me with depakote. i was fine, and then i was having really bad breakthru seizures. they raised my dose and it stoped them, good luck

Hi - unfortunately that was the case with every med my daughter went on - initially they would seem to be helping and then back to square one. The honeymoon period would only last a month or so........we were eventually supported by the docs to removal of almost all meds (base dose of Epival is all she takes) as they recognized none worked. Darn........and so it is...........Paula
