Question Seizure meds and dental problems??

I saw to my dentist yesterday because my gums bleed daily and since my brain surgery 5 months ago my teeth and gums have been sensitive. He told me my gums were swollen and that AEMs many times cause swelling of the gums, especially Dilantin. I never been on dilantin, I been on Keppra and Trileptal for more than a year, and many other for the past ten yrs, but never had this problem. has anyone had problems w epilepsy meds and dental issues?

Re: Seizure meds and dental problems??

Hi 030free,

Yes,I do know from experience that Dilantin can cause problems.
I started taking dilantin (now on tegretol) when I was only 4 years
old.Dilantin can also cause your gums to become very thick, after I
lost all my baby teeth,my gums being so thick, my adult teeth was
not able to grow thru my gums.My parents ended up taking me to the
dentist after a little longer and he had to actually cut my gums out.
Went in with no teeth, came out with all my top front teeth. If my parents
had waited much longer then my teeth would have just rotted inside my
gums.I did have problems with them about 30 years later, due to the
weakness of them and had to get them all replaced with caps.
I do not know about any of the other meds. causing the same problems,
but,if it does give you a warning about it,then be careful, things can
happen. My doctor ended up taking me off dilantin and putting me on teg.
when tegretol first came out about 25 years ago, mainly because the
dilantin did not control my seizures.Good-luck!!

Take care,Sherri

Re: Seizure meds and dental problems??

Keppra I never had issues with dental.
Teg caused gum growth. I had to have my gums trimmed a few times.
Dilantin did a number on my teeth. I had lets try and count 4 caps up front, 3 crowns in back, and a few RC's. That was in part to not having dental coverage for over a decade.

Not fun. All that work was done in the last YEAR!

Re: Seizure meds and dental problems??

My teeth are a mess. i was on dilantin for so long that my gums were swollen and bleeding all the time. I'm now on Keppra and I actually wake myself up sometimes grinding my teeth in my sleep. topamax did the same thing. Not sure if it's medication related or if I'm just a teeth grinder.

I brush my teeth with peroxide before toothpaste and then rinse w/ listerine. My mother had a periodontist tell her that peroxide is great for gum problems.
