Re: temporal lobe epilepsy

Welcome to the boards benlillie. Temporal lobe epilepsy is is mainly brief loss of consciousness. Its a disorder with loss of judment, uncontrolled behavior, and abnormal acts. I had a head injury on my right temporal lobe when I was 6 years old but didnt start having seizures tilll later. The injury caused my brain tissue to die (a.k.a Mesial Sclerosis) and no AEMs after 20 yeras could stop my attacks, so I had to undergo Anterior Temporal Lobectomy (surgery) 6 months ago, and now Im free of seizures. Temporal epilepsy can be caused by a head injury, infection or a major trauma. The majority of patients with this type of seizures have an aura (sensation or warning that precedes the attack). If u have these symptoms u should see a good neurologist, he/she need to examine and conduct different exams like an EEG, to evaluate the brain's electrical activity and determine any present epileptic cells, and if u have them, what medication is right for you. have u seen a Neuro? What meds are u taking?

Re: temporal lobe epilepsy

The medication i take are tegretol retard and gabapentine. My epilepsy was diagnosed 7 years ago but my head injury was 26 years ago. I will be having my third M.R.I saturday 13 oct to check leasions on my brain fingers crossed they will be no worse than last time.

Re: temporal lobe epilepsy

wow I wish u the best for ur MRI, but Neuro hasnt said if ur spells were due to the head injury, or was it something else? Like I said if they r starting in the same lobe its most lilkely that was the cause. Ask ur Neuro if there is any mesial sclerosis present in the scans. I'll keep u in my prayers.

Re: temporal lobe epilepsy

Hi, I hope it's OK if I join your thread.

Benlillie, you will get a lot of good advice from 030free, I read this board all the time! Best of luck to you. Congrats to you 030 on your anniversary. I am feeling much better and was down to see my surgeon in Nov; he gave me a very good report. So far I'm 3 mths seizure free and counting!

Merry Christmas to you both, to everyone on the Board and a happy, pain-free 2008. Thank you all for sharing your thoughts, feelings and advice.
