Menstrual Cycles and auras/seizures

I notice that whenever I'm menstruating, I have auras and my brain feels "off". I know that it has been documented that there is a connection between the hormones and seizure activity. I have never been told I have catamenial epilepsy by any of my doctors while they are aware of my tendency to have adverse brain activity around that time of the month.

I'm wondering for those who also experience this. Is there anything you take around that time that helps counteract these spells. I have been (grand mal) seizure free for some time but these spells around my cycle make it difficult to function.

Any feedback, advice is appreciated.

Re: Menstrual Cycles and auras/seizures

Hello,
I also have catamenial epilepsy and I get simple partial seizures at the time of my period, and the time of ovulation in the middle of the month. My Neuro never really commented on it, but one day, I asked if going on a birth control pill would help at all by levelling out my hormones. He said I could try it, and so I made an appointment with my gyno.
On the first pill I tried (Yaz), I noticed a difference in my seizures after about 4 months. There were less of them around the time of my period, and they were more mild than they usually are. But I was having irregular periods on that pill, so my gyno switched me to another pill (Yasmin). So far, this pill doesn't work as good for my seizures as the first one did. I do notice that I haven't really been getting any seizures in the middle of the month like I used to (which is awesome), but the ones I get around the time of my period are as bad as they were before I started taking any birth control pill. My doctor said we can still work to find one that works right, since there are so many. It's also difficult with many seizure meds to find a birth control pill that works effectively (to level out your homones or as actual birth control) because it fights for the same protein in your blood as many seizure meds, like Tegretol, which I'm on.
So if you're not on BC, maybe you could give that a try.
Good luck!

Re: Menstrual Cycles and auras/seizures

Hi Sentencedoing and Topamax,

What kind of BC pill were you on that helped but made your
periods irregular? Are your BC pills prog. and estrogen? My Dr.
would not put me pn any that had estrogen in them also because
I smoke and am over 40.She would only try me on progesterone only
and the one(I don't remember the name of it)made my seizures worse.
Wonder if there may be other prog. only pills that could work?

I have always had catamenial seizures for 35 years now,and my neuro
has never actually diagnosed me with them either.Mine has always only
been just around my period, but, now they are coming when I am ovulating
also(very scary),they are harder to know when they will be coming.I have
complex partials and drop attacks.Any info. will be appreciated.

Take care,Sherri
