I post several months ago about my handicap son who started having tonic clonic seizures at the age of 25. He had one in Aug. of 06 and a second one on 10/10/ 07. We had a CAT scan done with the first seizure and that came back normal, also had an EEG which came back abnormal. I chose not to medicate at that time because he does not drive and is kept fairly safe. As a result of the second seizure that he had in Oct, he just had an MRI done. Got results back yesterday and am a little perplexed. The Dr say the MRI was fine. Its just showed signs of an old stroke. I have no idea when he might have suffered a stroke. I even asked them if they are sure that they have the correct MRI results because he is only 26 and to my knowledge has never had a stroke. They assured me they were 100% sure it was the correct MRI. After doing a little research(less then15 minutes) I guess its possible. I sure did not expect this and am really confused about when he may have had the stroke. The way the DRs are talking its no big deal and we should carry on as usual. They do want to monitor him every 6 month for now. Anyone else experience this?
Not all strokes have severe symptoms, and it's possible that the seizures could have been part of a stroke. Depending on what part of the brain, there may be very vague symptoms, and if it happened during his sleep, nobody would notice.
I was recently diagnosed with small strokes ("ischemic small vessel disease") near my brainstem. I've been having TIAs, but they involved slurred speech and problems swallowing- not any paralysis, bad headache, etc. My previous MRIs have been fine- the one last month wasn't. I don't know exactly when these happened. I'm 44. No birth control pills, I quit smoking with a p ulmonary embolism that was huge- back in April, and didn't smoke much even before then, no alcohol, drugs, etc..... my blood pressure is low, and I'm a diabetic......those are risk factors. Plus I've got a blood clotting disorder.
Strokes aren't always the one-sided paralysis, drooling, loss of speech type..... Many don't leave a lot of noticable change, but do put someone at risk for more strokes.

This is just the topic I think about a lot .
I,m 44 my first gmal was 14 yrs ago and resembled a stroke in every way.
I was a drunk and kind of blew it off , I had one sided loss of many things ,my lips were numb my eye drooped ,my hair tingled ,I dropped cigarettes in my left hand , I walked side ways (sober) I could barely use my left,foot,shoulder,
it also numbed my groin area causing pain ,???? wow memorys .
I am epileptic and have had many types of szs and have taken now 7/8 meds that do not work and I feel even cause more szs???
I being forced and asked to make ssi claims now and wonder is this something I should try to discuss with my neuro????? because of stress and depression I only get worse and one feeds the other .
I responded because of a key word that "having another stroke" is there a way to tell if I had that sz and it was a stroke?
And the main ? would be on topic would a gmal or continuous szs cause a stroke ? thanks Rick
There's something called "Todd's Paralysis" that can happen with seizures, that isn't a stroke, but looks like one. One side of the body (or one part) will be altered in how it normally functions for up to 24 hours or so. It's good to let the doc know when that happens if it's new, and he/she doesn't know about it. It doesn't mean the seizures are necessarily getting worse, just have a different post-ictal period. But it can be very unsettling.
About Social Security- I hated applying for disabilty. I felt like a failure and an unproductive scum....but there are times when you simply can't work because your body is doing things you can't control. It's hard. I got approved on my first application, but be prepared to be denied and have to appeal. Have as much documentation as possible. You might be asked to see a SSD/SSI psychiatrist- doesn't mean they think you're crazy, just weeding through the ones wanting a free ride. I want to go to work so bad it hurts- I miss co-workers (3 1/2 years now, and no contact from any of them- I'm isolated, live alone, and have no friends here since I moved back to help with a demented parent who died shortly after I moved- got sick in AZ, and wasn't treated properly for a urinary infection, and she got septic- blood infected- and died. She'd been at an art opening the day before- demented, but still enjoying outings). Anyway, SSI and SSD are different. Be sure you apply for all you qualify for. Seizures are a major qualifying diagnosis.

Amazing I guess I "used" to know that I guess????
What a trip yeah it turns out I have actually been doing that for a long time in various degrees , not focusing while reading ,remembering things , the loss of focus, I just faked it , but I am kinda of odd anyway and can do and think about 9/10 hobbies at once and was married and remodeling and working and spending all my time with my d.d. and was trying to make strong bonds with family plus,plus ,plus some more.......
All of that ended in a very short period of time and I was and still am very worried about my d.d. and her well being around my wife and the stress from all that just sent my brain into serious misfiring and until recently I did not understand that I was also having ??? (can,t think)mmmm petitmal szs and a constant aura but after 3 gmals in one day and at least 3weeks to recover I have had 24/7 ear ringing ,and a very real paranoia about being around anything noisy or dangerous where I could hurt someone else ,which is the only types of work I know and can do.
also I figured out that my back problem is aggrevated in my sleep and that is well documented from work ,??? I can not beleive that it took me so long to figure out duuuh that my back went out in my sleep after a gmal??
On topic ....I went through all this before and "forgot" to go back and now it is a lot worse and I am reaching out again .
The depression Is my monster now I have 13 yrs sober and under stand all that and had ptsd I know/knew myself real well and was truly happy .
I feel a big issue for me is going to be not having a sz but taking the meds I think I would prefer a sz. to the stupidity created by maxing out on some of these meds ????if I take a lot of tegretol I can,t even read a book let alone get to a do a job........sorry for rambling , but thanks for listening.
