Re: How often do seizures occur?

bettyst, I've had them and those grandma seizures are rough.

allison, it varies depending on the individual. With Carbatrol, mine come every 2 or 3 months but they were more frequent and severe when they weren't under control. With Phenytoin they were much less frequent, even nonexistent, but the side effects were much worse than with Carbatrol.

It also varies depending on activity. Mine have been more frequent when I haven't had enough sleep or have been on the internet too long.

Re: How often do seizures occur?

Hi There.
This all depends on a person's brain.
If you have medication to control seizures (like I do) than years can go by without one.
Every one is different. And just because some one has a disorder, this does not mean they will effected by seizures every day, every other day, every week, month, year, etc.
It depends on the damage to the brain and the kind of care and medication that you are getting.
Just my opinion.
Hope that helps.

Re: How often do seizures occur?

I am on alot of meds to help control my sezs, but I still have them. Sometimes I'll go maybe a month or two with out any, then I may have a period where I'll have a few in one week, or maybe just one a month.

I agree, it depends on how much damage is done to the brain. I also notice that when I may be under stress I am more apt to have them. This last few weeks have been very stressful for me. I've had about 4 or so. Some just very mild ones, and one really bad one.

I think it just depends on the person because no one is the same.

Re: How often do seizures occur?

How much of Z and Keppra are you taking?
Tripp is on Zonegran 400mg daily taking it as 200mg am and 200mg pm. He is also on Depakote 750mg three times a day.....we just added 30mg on pheno at night. His CPS are NOT under control.

I do so pray that the added pheno at night helps!!!!!!

Re: How often do seizures occur?

There is no standard for how often. I went for YEARS without having a seizure. Then when I went downhill and they tried changing my meds like crazy I would have 6-12 per MONTH for a few years. Now It's about every 3-6 months for a seizure to occur (a lot better than multiple per month!).

I wish it was less than one per year, but hey, I can live with it at this rate!

Re: How often do seizures occur?

betty...poor Tripp. (and poor you!)

I take 3,000 Keppra (1,500 mgs 2x a day) and 300 mgs Zonegran. I take the Zonegran all at once, at bedtime. If this combo doesn't work, my epi. guy suggested adding on phenobarb, as well! (I took pheno at 5 mos. old until I was about 2. Then no drugs at all until 42 yrs. old.)

I sure hope the pheno. helps Tripp, too!

Re: How often do seizures occur?

I wonder if Pheno is making a surge back for a potential medication. They had me on it from age 5 until I was 18 (good gosh just typing that makes me feel older then I am!). Most doctors had been going away from it from what I knew.

They had me on as high as 245 I think in PM only ( always PM only). Too long ago to try and remember it correctly. It took quite a while to reduce the dose to 15mg and then nothing.

My sezs were the same way-your period is one thing that can cause them to happen. It's a natural reaction of the brain to your cycle.
I could go months w/o one then 2-4 in one month-if you sit and figure it's like having at least 1-2 periods a month.
Mine are totally under control since my surgery in 2003-still taking meds-in fact my Dr wants me to think about tapering off the Teg xr.

Have a good day!
