Is Grapefruit alright to eat with Lamictal & Keppra ?

I was on Dilantin for my epilepsy & Grapefruit was a NO , NO.

Now I am taking Lamictal & Keppra – I was wondering if Grapefruit would be O.K. to take with those medications ?.

My Keppra bottle has a sticker on it that says not to eat grapefruit, but my Lamictal bottle doesn't...

Bahamas: I was told not to eat grapefruit with Keppra. There is an enzyme in there that conflicts with the Keppra and could cause more seizures. When in doubt, leave it out!

That is ironic. Keppra does not interact with any other drugs, but interacts in a bad way with a food? Crazy.

I never bothered to read any grapefruit warnings because I cannot eat citrus fruits anyway (the high acidity causes cankersores) but I would love to know why it causes problems for people taking certain drugs and what happens if a person eats grapefruit while taking one of those drugs.

BTW I take Lamictal and used to take Keppra with it.

Synchro12: I just had this conversation with someone recently and we researched it on the web. I can't post the links here so you'll have to go and search it. It has something to do with the enzymes in the grapefruit and also the tangelos that are a cross between oranges and grapefruits. The enzyme interacts with the meds and makes you have more seizures. I know it sounds crazy, but it's true.
