| | Acyclovir/ Chronic EBV
Hi Everybody, I am stricken with chronic EBV also. It just keeps on coming around and whacking me when I'm under a bit of stress. Luckily, I'm also a virologist and I knew that EBV is at least partially inhibited by acyclovir. The viral thymidine kinase enzyme is inbited by acyclovir (a nucleoside analogue). My doctor suggested I try it, and it did help with the severe episodes and it gives your immune system a chance to revcover a bit. The problem is that when you go off of it you can count on a recurrance. Though, my episodes seem to be shorter than before I went on acyclovir.
Although people argue about it, I think EBV leads to CFS or at least contributes to it. I also think there is a complex relationship between EBV and the body's hormone systems (thyroid, pituitary and adrenal glands), which in the long run leads to the anxiety and depression that people feel.
I think its clear that you have to baby yourself to get over this thing. Vits and minerals are helpful along with plenty of sleep and gentle exercise - don't over-do-it. I think it's kid of like trying to put a snake back into a tiny box from whence it came. Also, although it's hard, you have to ignore all the guilt and scepticism that other people bring.
Best of luck to all
