Can someone please explain to me in simple terms the difference between Epstein Barr Virus, and Mono? My daughter just found out that she has Epstein Barr, and from what I have been reading about it, I get totally confused because it sounds like it is Mono. What is the difference. Please.

Re: Confused

EBV is the virus that causes mononucleosis, so the terms are used interchangeably. EBV in most people causes mono, then goes dormant as a result of immune reaction (antibodies) to it. In some people, the virus doesn't go dormant or re-emerges causing chronic symptoms similar to mono. An EBV panel of antibodies on the blood can help in seeing the antibodies that mean current infection, past infection, past infection with continued viral activity, or no past exposure to the virus.

Re: Confused

Thanks you so much. I understand better now that you explained it to me. She began having problems with headaches months ago, but I find it very odd that a few months back she told me that two of the girls that she works with discovered they had mono after coming to work feeling sick for quite sometime and not being diagnosed. After that is when my daughter began to really not feel well herself, and now finds out that she has this virus. Thank you again!
