sittups vs. crunches

Which is a better exercise

Well crunches will target your upper abs more than the lower abs. Likewise, sittups will target your lower abs more than the upper. I stopped doing sittups and I do about 200 crunches a night. I do modified crunches so I work my obliques as well. It all depends on what part of your abs you're looking to tone.

Whats the difference between a sit-up and a crunch? is it just that with a sit-up you stay straight, and with a crunch, you curve more so your shoulders get closer to your knees?

A crunch is performed in a position that keeps your back flat on the floor and you lift your head/shoulders toward your knees - as opposed to bending at the waist to "sit up". They can be modified to be more challenging by "bicycling" your legs and keeping your feet off of the floor at all times.
