Re: body types

Hi,

Of course they have muscles. The muscle tone of an ectomorph is more lean and fine. They are naturally thin -- with normal eating habits and tend to have a more difficult putting on weight. Weight gain would normally be around the mid section.

The normal ecto body is short waisted/longer leg ratio.

Do a search on ectomorph....you'll find lots of info on it and suggestions for exercises to build muscle mass, eating, etc.

Yes, I'm an ectomorph and just starting to put on weight at age 49. This is the most I've ever weighed in my life (145 at 5'8) and I've normally eaten anything and everything I want. I'm enjoying the extra fullness....but yes, it's mostly around my tummy. I've inherited it from my father who was the CLASSIC ecto. You know Don Knotts??? My dad was a 6'3 version of him. ALL of my dad's family was ecto....Dang! but at least weight gain wasn't an issue I've ever had to deal with.

Re: body types

Somatype definitions generally go along the lines of:

Ectomorph (endurance athlete):
"Hard Gainer"
Slim Build
Lean
Low muscle mass
Takes Longer to Gain Muscle

Mesomorph (power athlete):
Athletic
High muscle mass
Gains Muscle Easily
Gains Fat More Easily Than Ectomorphs

Endomorph (nonathlete):
Soft
Underdeveloped Muscles
Round Physique
Weight Loss is Difficult
Gains Muscle Easily Like the Mesomorph

Most people are a combination of different somatypes.

Re: body types

Explain what your body looks like.....

Are you m or f?

Pick a famous person and compare....

As Endorphin Junky mentioned, most of us are a combination -- but more of one than another.

Try to explain your shape and we might be able to help.

Place your thumb and middle finger around your wrist. If they overlap you are an ectomorph, if they only touch you are a mesomorph and if they don't touch you are an endomorph.

Re: body types

From what you say (and what Bruce Lee's body looked like -- lean fighting machine! AWESOME!)...I would place you ectomorph. Bruce Lee was in tip-top shape. He wasn't just born with those muscles and worked intensely to get there.

Other famous males who are ectomorph are Tom Hanks, Brad Pitt, Seth Green, Edward Norton, and bodybuilders Frank Zane and on one site it said Flex Wheeler -- I doubt that one.

If you mentioned you were average/small/slight like Bruce Lee, but naturally muscular, I'd say ecto-mesomorphic.

There's a lot of info on exercises for ectomorphs.

What type of sports do you do? Are you involved in martial arts? Bruce Lee was my brother's idol. Kung Fu was his "thing" since the 60's. Equally intense at training.

I hope this was helpful....

Re: body types

With all macronutrients, chemical bonds are broken and energy is released for either immediate use as fuel in the cells (ie. you "burn the fat") or for energy storage in adipose tissue. All things being equal, the more fat cells you have, the greater your storage capacity and hence, fat mass.

As for the second half of the equation, you "breathe out the weight of the fat molecule" (you probably hear this phrase all time as well!). Fatty acids are primarily chains of carbon atoms. So after chemical reactions release the energy for use, you eliminate the major by-products (carbon dioxide, water) through expiration, sweat, or urine.

The pathways for fuel metabolism are similar in everyone -- some are just more efficient at it, simply due to physiology and/or having the "thin genes", or as a result of training adaptations (eg. fat utilization becomes more efficient).

I forgot to mention that even though there may not be overt physical signs of excessive unhealthy fatty food consumption, there could be adverse effects on the arteries, organs, and other bodily tissues.

Re: body types

Female mesomorph here... but I'm not visibly muscular.

The reason I place myself as a mesomorph is because, at 5'2" and a US size 6/8 (UK 10/12), I weigh about 147lbs (which is pretty heavy). The fact that I'm heavier but small would indicate more muscle, I guess..

Re: body types

Hi dirtyblonde07,

I found some info on endomorphs. That's what J.Lo is. ....as well as Oprah Winfrey, Liz Hurley, Cindy Crawford, Minnie Driver, (Marilyn Monroe) ...

The description of an endo: soft, rounded, plump, curvy. Shoulders are often narrower than hips (pear-shaped) or ("big booty"?). Fat is easier to gain and harder to lose compared to ectomorphs or mesomorphs. Weight is usually put on in the front centre area.

One can be a combo with either ectomorph or mesomorph.

Hope this helps.

Best to you,
quincy

Re: body types

Hi KaNGaMaLoo,

Which famous people do you compare to? It's possible that you're a Meso Endomorph. It's described as rounded with muscular definition. Does that fit at all? Do you have a tendency to put on weight in the middle area?

I'm pretty straight forward, ectomorphic. I've recently put on some weight and added some "softness". But, my tummy is also enjoying all that extra eating!! It's a little rounder below my navel. I definitely have to start a more stringent exercise schedule..some cardio to lose some of the excess and for energy, as well as keep up weights to increase upper body definition. I may as well use the bulk I've worked so hard to gain (nothing like being on antidepressants and still eating/munching/grazing between regular meals). My metabolism has definitely changed in the past 2 years. Not a bad thing, tho.

Re: body types

Non overweight ectomorphs who eat a lot of fatty and sugary food can still end up with high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, kidney and liver problems - the same issues that affect overweight people. The difference is that these people usually go along thinking they are healthy and show no warning signs of ill health until they need help urgently.

Lets face it, you see an endomorph who looks overweight and unfit and think "there is someone asking for a heart attack" but think nothing of a skinny ectomorph who might have pizza and a dozen beers every night. Due to todays emphasis on looks, shape and weight, the endomorph is more likely to realize his health may be in danger and choose to do something about his lifestyle.

BTW, I am an Endo-Mesomorph with a big heavy skeletal structure and broad shoulders who stores fat everywhere very easily. Because of my body type I have never been able to slot into a healthy portion of a weight chart and according to the BMI index I am obese and am in danger of serious health issues. According to the 'experts' I am 50lbs overweight, however my doctor is happy because my blood test results and blood pressure are all well inside the healthy range and I work out 5 or 6 days a week.
