Cardio after Weights

More and more I keep hearing how cardio should be done on "off" days or in the morning with weight work being done later on in the day. now, my typical gym routine starts with weights, then I'll do abs for 10 or so min and end it off anywhere between 20-40 min of cardio. Now my questions are, is doing cardio after a workout that detrimental to the musclebuilding process as some people make it out to be? and part two of my question is, with the time I spend on cardio and the time to get home and hit the shower, I usually don't get food,shakes,etc. in my system until an hour or so after I finished lifting...is it absolutly madatory that you must consume something an hour withing completing weight work?

It's not detrimental to bodybuilding, I know alot of guys that do it, for some it works and some it doesn't. The reason I do my cardio on the off days is so I can have full energy for it and I have a full supply of protein and nutrients to pump into my muscles for recovery. I found that after weightlifting my cardio suffered greatly because I didn't have enough energy left, and it's nice to spread my workouts throughout the week so I get some exercise everyday.

Of course it isn't mandatory to eat something within an hour, but the sooner the better.
