Question Help! Are elliptical machines a good cardio workout?

Hi there!

I am 29, 5'2 and 130 lbs. Obviously, I want to lose at least 15 pounds. Up until recently, my only options were fitness tapes but I hated the cardio ones with a passion so I never did them. I recently moved to a new apartment complex which has a fully equipped gym. The cardio machines they have are (Nautilus) stationary bikes, treadmills adn elliptical machines. Which of these should I focus on in order to get the best possible results? How often should I work out and for how long?

I was leaning toward the elliptical because I have bad knees, but having never used one before, I don't know how good a workout it is. Any and all help and suggestions will be GREATLY appreciated! TIA!
