Gaining weight from working out!

I know that when working out a person would gain muscle mass which a possibility of a weight gain. Which is a good thing! But usually people lose inches. Well this doesn't seem to work for me. I have been increasing in inches since I have been working out. I did gain 10lbs and 2 inches. I don't mind gaining weight but not inches. I tried dieting several ways to even it out but nothing seems to work. Will eventually the inches start to drop. I heard that some people will gain inches and then just drop it? Is that true? It feels like I am getting water retention or something like that. Anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks to anyone who replies!
