Yea, starvation mode isnt good....you could totally starve yourself, it will burn off all the fat and some muscle, but then you will gain it back quickly once you start eating again..soo, your method isnt good.
It is trial and error, but if you need a #, id say for your height and weight, shoot for 1300 calories, I alaways say well balanced diet is the key.. Fruits, veggies, complex carbs, lean meats, not fried, NO CHIPS, or sweets, cut out excess sugar like candy, cola. EAT many small meals a day...
Do full body resistance training, more muscles the better, get adequate rest.
For cardio, switch it up, dont let your body get use to what you are doing. MONITOR your Heart rate.
