shin splints

does anyone know of a good shoe insert for shin splints? i get them really bad as i run 3-5 miles almost everyday. i tried getting new running shoes but they didnt help. i guess i didnt get the best ones, but i didnt want to spend 100 dollars on my workout shoes. i just got some decent ones from kohl's.

I don't know of any shoe that could prevent shin splints, but when I used to jog with a large group of people, we were taught a warm-up technique to help prevent them. All we did was walk backwards on our heels. We probably looked ridiculous but I didn't care. I never had shin problems after that.

Here's a tip and please take note:

STOP running 3-5 miles a day!
This will result in stress fractures in your legs. You must rest your body!

I would also suggest going to a "real" running store where they can analyze your gait and suggest the right kind of shoe for you. And I would ask what is better? Spending $100 on shoes or messing up your legs and feet?

Do you pronate or supinate?
Check the tread on a worn pair of shoes and see if the inside or outside is worn more than the other. If the inside is worn more than the outside than you overpronate. If the opposite is true, you supinate or underpronate.

Re: shin splints

I run cross country and used to the have the same problem with shin splints. I would reccommend getting orthotics made to fit your feet - I got mine done at a local foot & ankle clinic. I would also suggest trying Brooks "Adrenaline" running shoes if your new ones don't do the trick -these are the only shoes that have enough support for my over-pronation problem.
