The best thing I have found for my back (particularly the sides, right behind the armpits) is bent rows. I use a 10-lb dumbell, stand on the right side of a bench, place my left knee on the bench and lean forward, back straight. Your right arm should be hanging down with the weight. Raise the dumbell slowly up, bending your arm until it is close to your body, then lower slowly. I do 10 reps, then switch sides, standing on the left side of the bench with the right knee on the bench. I do 3 sets on each side. Does that make any sense? My description may be poor.
Also, when I'm walking, I will stick my elbows out to the sides, with my fists close together at about the level of my collar bone, then rotate side-to-side with each step. That works my back pretty well, too.
