Yoga For The Rest of Us

I recently ordered this tape and have been doing it for about 5 days now. The tape is geared toward people who are either out of shape , injured or older and need to do modifications on the poses. It begins with about 20 minutes of stretching from a seated position (in a straight backed chair) then progresses to 20 more minutes of standing poses and ends the last 20 minutes doing first sun salutations then relaxtion. I feel wonderfully relaxed after finishing the tape and have even noticed some muscle soreness so I think it is doing some good. I know I need to do more aerobically but I really need to ease into it so I won't feel overloaded and quit altogether. I would appreciate opinions on how much of the yoga and aerobic exercise I need to have as my ending goal. Do you think every other day for each would be enough and while I am enjoying the almost hour of yoga I know I couldn't do that much aerobically and honestly, really don't want to. Would a final goal of 30 minutes ever other day raising my heart rate be enough? Any opinions would be appreciated. I need to loose some weight and lower my triglycerides. TIA

Re: Yoga For The Rest of Us

Well, if you were inactive before starting the yoga routine, and if you are increasing your activity level to aerobices 30 min 3x a week and the rest yoga, without increasing your calorie intake; Yes, you will lose weight! Until you get used to that, you may want to strength train one of the yoga days for some awesome results. If not, you'll still lose weight.

Re: Yoga For The Rest of Us

Jessica, thanks so much for your reply. I have decided to do the yoga tape on Sat., Sun, Tues, Wed. and Thurs.. On Mon, Wed and Fri. I will be doing the Sansome walking tape. I already have the one mile tape and will hopefully move on to the higher distances as I grow stronger. I do hope to loose weight but the exercise is also suppose to help lower my triglyceride level which is scarily high. Of couse, loosing weight will also have the same effect. I have never done strength training before and was under the impression that it had to be done every other day. Do you have any suggestions on a program or tape that might be easy for a novice to follow? Thanks for any additional advice you might be able to offer.

Re: Yoga For The Rest of Us

To get started on strength training, they advise you to start out with 3 and 5 lb weights. You'll be amazed on how strong you will get if you do this about 2x a week. They do recommend strength training 2x a week because it helps build bone density in prevention of osteoperosis, really speeds up the metabolism, and just helps you look better. You may think your going to bulk up, but really, your actually burning fat and toning up. They say the more muscle you have, the more calories you'll burn even at rest! You'll be suprised at how much weight training can be enjoyable after you get strong. My first video tape for weight training was "Lift Weights to Lose Weight" by Kathy Smith, and she just recently came out with LWTLW #2, a second one. She's great. I still use the second one and also videos by the Firm. You have to start off light, but there are great benefits to weight training. Hope this helps!
